2006 S60 Excessive Road Noise

Post by 98expeditionXLT »

I recently used my wife's 2006 S60 2.5 T with 54K miles on the same stretch of highway that I commute on 5 days a week with my 1995 Volvo 850 with 266K miles and was shocked at how much more road noise there is in the S60 at highway speeds compared to the 850. I thought one of the windows was open and I do not consider the 850 to be quiet at all. On the 850, I have replaced many suspension parts and none resulted in any significant reduction of the noise levels. When I am driving either vehicle the noise seems to be coming from the rear. I still have a few months left on the 6 year factory warranty on the S60. Has anyone encountered the same problem on the S60 and been able to reduce or eliminate the noise? Unfortunately I consider this road noise so bad that I rather drive the 850 and it would stop me from buying another S60.

Tires chopped? Have you rotated tires frequently? Just my thought.

Tires are nearing the end of life, are worn evenly and they are MIchelins. They will be replaced by the end of next month. As far as bearings go, I don't hear any low speed noise. I recently had a bad bearing on my 850 and that started making noises at low speeds then higher speeds. If necessary, I will have the dealer look at it while still under warranty as I have a couple minor issues that need to be resolved.

When modern tires are near their end, they usually make a ton of noise!
