Hey,
I'm new in this forum and just bought my 2001 C70. After researching all over I can't really tell if my car belongs to the P2 family or not. So I'm not sure if i should follow the "P2-Instructions" or not. How can I find that out or does anybody of you guy know an answer.
Another question I have is: Do you use Toyota T-IV to replace Mobil JWS3309 or the "original' Volvo ATF fluid?
I know there are hundreds of threads out there discussing this topic but they only cause confusion. I can easily get the T-IV but find it very difficult to get the Mobil JWS3309 in the Phoenix region and the Volvo stuff is incredibly expensive. (20$/quart).
I would appreciate your help!!

I thought my tranny was doomed, shifting hard and slow to engage when moving from reverse to drive. I followed this posted procedure closely on Saturday morning and the results were amazing. My 2002 S60 with 106,230 miles shifts like new, I'm amazed. The old fluid looked like old coffee sludge, I can't believe this process isn't in the regular service recommendations from Volvo.
It took me about 2 hours, but could do it in an hour now that I've done it once. I used 12 quarts of Castrol ATF for imports and in the end the fluid pumping out wasn't perfect but certainly was good enough. I highly recommend this easy do-it-yourself maintenance. My only regret is that I didn't do this at about 75,000 miles.

I just did the drain and fill procedure thru the pan plug on my 94 850 wagon. Did a quick drive for 5 minutes. Hit all gears before pulling onto the ramp. 15/16 wrench for the plug and drained into a pan. Poured it into a premarked jug. Out came 4.25 quarts of nasty stuff. New crush washer and filled it with 4.25 quarts of toyota type IV synthetic ATF bought for 5.45 a quart at my local toyota dealer. I only had a slight shudder between 1st and 2nd. She now shifts sooooo much better. Going to do the same thing in 2 weeks. Then 2 weeks after that. Got my eye on the steps for the wife's 2003 S60 AWD next. Highly recommend changing it out anyway you want just change it.

I'll be giving this a go on the V70 this weekend, we'll see how it goes. Getting one of these for the flush...

Ive seen a version of the process where run the motor and drop fluid into the dipstick hole while its running. I was thinking of adding a connection/valve to allow the fresh fluid to flow at a good rate while I do the flush so that I dont have to manually keep dumping fluid in by he quart, in addition to this I'm thinking of going through the gears during the flush to see if that helps get extra crud out of there. I have a prologned 1-2 shift when cold, so we'll see if this and or the PNP switch helps at all
Thoughts?

Similiar or exactly to what you intend to do. Best to have a second person to shift the gears and just in case you need to shut it down during the process

Is that model year not the 5 speed ASIN transmission? Mine is a 2000 V70 and it has the 5 speed ASIN AT so it needs the full synthetic fluid or else!
I think the problem with filling while flushing at the same time is that the volume you can put into the transmission fill tube is waaaaay slower than what is being pumped out while the trans pump is pumping. Simultaneously doing both would run your pump dry very soon, definitely not what you want to do.
So let us know how it went and if you have any better results from your transmission now.

Our 98 is the older 4speed. I plan on choking\restricting the output pipe somewhat, we'll see how well that actually works out in reality. The 2000 does require a specific spec (J...something), but it's not exclusively synthetic if I recall.

JW 3309 I think but either way the Volvo stuff IS Mobil 3309 and is not Synthetic. You can search for links on discussions by people who have contacted Mobil on this. There is Specs for the Mobil Synthetic in the link also.boosted5cyl wrote:Our 98 is the older 4speed. Instead of a continuous Flush as in the Video just Drain and Fill and then Flush out 3 quarts at a time and fill and again. Repeat till new fluid comes out. This way you will not run the system dry. I think it is not possible to keep up with volume coming out. Be sure to fill as much as you drain to keep track of quantity so you don't have to add too much later or drain excess in the end.Volvo Manic wrote:boosted5cyl

Yeah the more I think I about it, doing it step by step makes sense. Why reinvent the wheel as they say!
