Hey everyone. It's been a while since I've posted or even had time to browse MVS. School is kickin' my butt.
I have to share this, and ask for some help/suggestions. To the point:
This morning I left Lawrencetown NS, heading to Kentville NS on the 101. Doing about 100-110kms, whe. I feel this sensation that I'm loosing power/acceleration. Not electrical power. I hadn't felt it this way before. Anyway, the car just begins to slow down and I'm wondering "what's going on here" as I kinda push on the gas pedal a bit to see if it pulls. It "wants to", for lack of better words, but can't then it things just got strange and I pulled towards the shoulder as I brake and slow to a stop.
When I stop the car I think I turned it off right away and swear a bit :/ then I wonder what happened. Anyway I take a look under the hood and I dont notice anything. I check the dipstick/crankcase, and oil cooler hoses as they need replacement soon, and don't see anything so I try and start it, it cranks weakly - no turn over. Over the next 1 hour (while messaging friends and such asking for ideas they say fuel pump relay) I take it out and take cover off, it's fine, I didn't know what to think. Over that hour I tried to start 2 or 3 more times, twice to record sound for a friend to hear the cranking.
As I wait for tow truck, friend messages me "hate to say this but have you checked the timing belt?". I jump out of the car and guess what I see... A slightly open, slightly melted timing belt cover. I'll up load a pic + video when Im able to from a computer.
Is the car most certainly Fu@€]{€D now?
I don't know what to do about it at the moment, nevermind getting to and from school 15kms everyday. I'll do a TB job (my first ever) if possible to see what happens - cause I won't be able to afford to pay to have it done. They'll want mucho dollars right?..
Will pictures etc help anyone be able to make comments or suggestions?
My heart exploded today, ultimate frown.
Thanks for any help guys...I mean - any too.
My morning disaster - how done am I?

Remove the timing cover before trying to restart the car. it is possible a pulley bearing or water pump siezed up. If the belt did slip off or break then you will likely need to replace the intake valves.
The procedure would be to
1. Check the belt to see if it really did slip or if it is just destroying itself.
2. If the belt is still working but breaking apart you should replace the belt, tensioners, pulleys and water pump.
3. If the belt has broken or slipped off you should test for bent valves .
4. If valves are bent then I suggest you find a local machine shop or get a head from clearwater (www.cylinder-heads.com) .
5. You will need a reconditioned head, top end gasket kit including Volvo liquid head sealant ,timing belt kit, tensioner and water pump, coolant and distilled water.
If you do the labor you could expect to complete this under $1000 US. It is a 2 day job for a first timer.

Well it depends if the belt actually came right off. Usually it is the tensioner that goes on these things before the timing belt.
I have revived a few cars with this situation. The best thing you can do is do not drive it and tow it in.
Take off the belt cover and inspect.
Get a spare tensioner and timing belt (set to proper timing marks) put it on and manually crank it by putting a socket to the crank shaft bolt.
If you get the engine moving without any metal sounds and it spins freely then you might be lucky.
Word of caution though, even if it moves freely you still could have damaged one or more valves.
Once you do the manual turn process, then crank the engine and see how she runs.
You should state what the mileage is.. i find most of these events happen between 170 and 240 thousand Kilometres!

Well, you probably bent most of your valves. I had my timing belt break and you can see in the picture where the valves hit the piston heads. Lost compression completely in 2 of the 4 valves and the other 2 were weak. About to get my head back after the valve job. About a $800-$900 job to do it right.
Thanks, I will check it out tomorrow provided there is light when I get home from school..(or I guess break out the work light - duh. hah)JDS60R wrote:Remove the timing cover before trying to restart the car. it is possible a pulley bearing or water pump siezed up. And post a pic or two while I'm at it.
Just a question; can't I get a new engine for around $1000... - that sounds "easier" to me, assuming I can find one somewhere. Which might be difficult right now. Just trying to think of all my options.
Thanks for the help guys.

I'd say if it cranks slow probably not a broken bely it would crank faster than normal if it had low or no compression! I would just pull the 12mm bolt and slide the cover up and look at it!
Hey,
So, in checking my options I remember friend's friend has a V70r he's parting out. The reason being: The previous owner's (my new buddy's) ex-girlfriend put diesel fuel in the engine and drove it, I guess not knowing or thinking that was "OK". *eye roll*.
The current owner/parter-outer says it runs for 10 mins -- actually here is the ad verbatim:
"we are parting out this 1999 volvo v70r wagon ,the owner mistakenly put diesel fuel into the gas tank. the engine will start and run for about 10 minutes then it will sputter and miss. we believe the engine is good and there is something wrong with the fuel management system. Everything is available on the car except for the driveshaft it is gone already.let us know what you need and we will try to help."
So, what do you think about that. Would one be able to revive/fix the 'damage' done to that engine by putting running diesel fuel in it?
Please let me know.
I'm wondering where else, non private seller wise, to look for used b5234 engine for my car now. Please chime in with any thoughts anyone. Thank you. I'll try to update my sig. in a moment to my current...car's (I'm mad at it right now) model/specs.
Thanks!

You can clean out the fuel rail and fuel system and put regular gas in it! Buy the whole car and run it! We drain about 4-7 fuel tanks a year that were filled with diesel! Won't cause damage to engine due to that the diesel is more oil based! Replace the plugs to, oil fouled that's why it won't run long! It takes a while but it will run again without touching engine internals! If they drop it cheap get it!
Thanks D_V_Ent, appreciate the advice very much.D_V_ENT850R wrote:You can clean out the fuel rail and fuel system and put regular gas in it! Buy the whole car and run it! Hopefully he's still got it and maybe I can get it for a decent price.
Incase that doesn't pan out (my lucks been real bad as of late) anyone feel free to post other engines for sale they might know of please. I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Edit: PS; would I be in good shape with just a new head? Or there might be damage beyond that? Sorry if that's a no brainer. Thank you.
