Unfortunately repairing the hose didn't fix it. Just got the part put it in and no dice. Oh well was hoping to get lucky.
So the problem is definitly the same the car stalls on incline and declines. Not always but often. Train tracks are a good example if they have a good little up and down to them. ANy suggestions are greatly appreciated Im ready to do the CPS because the fuel relay seems less likely. Thanks everyone.

I hope I don't muddy the thinking here too much but I am curious if the stalling on tracks and inclines is more pronounced when the fuel level is lower. That might point the investigation in a different direction. Other people here with a lot more experience than I on the 70 series might know if an intermittent low fuel pressure situation might show up as a fault code.
Also, our local dealer has offered to read codes for free. Maybe yours will too. Or a parts store might as well.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Do bumps have any effect on it? I might think loose electrical connection of some sort - ground, alternator, battery cable.

Bumps no but incline yes. Had some issues on a long hill the other day luckily Raleigh in pretty flat. The gas level question is interesting I am down a half tank and it is more common but Im not sure the problem isn't just getting worse. I havn't been driving the car much or at all for a few weeks. I'll fill it up and see if I notice a difference. I had replaced the fuel filter that was my first attempt to fix the issue and there seemed to be planty of fuel on both ends. Also when I replaced the vacuum line the flame trap was basically spotless no gunk at all.

so the car had died last night as I puuled into drive after vacuum hose repair. As it stalled the tach was really jumping up and down im sure just trying to keep the engine going. So today i decided to "test" the fuel relay. When I turned the key one click to listen to the pump I noticed it does not shut off after 4 seconds like I read that it should it just stays on. dees this indicate relay failure? I then pulled the relay and jumped with a paper clip. Same thing of course the pump keeps pumping but it wouldn;t start. It turns over of course just doesn;t start. Again most of the time it does start right up and only stalls on incline but it stalled last night and now didn;t start.
But the fact that the pump just keeps running even with the relay in? Is that a messed up relay?

Every fuel pump relay failure I have had has led to a failure to pump. It has consistently been due to fouled contacts or broken solder joints in the relay, so I would rule relay failure out for now. If the pump keeps running it might be due to a failure to maintain fuel pressure. I have much more experience on 700/900 Volvos, but if those were my symptoms I would look toward the fuel pressure regulator first, then the fuel pump check valve and/or the fuel pump. Probably would be good to test and see exactly what fuel pressure you get at the fuel rail when it is pumping. By the way, is this car turbo or non?

Thanks RBH. I appreciate the thoughts. Honestly I do not have a lot of knowledge about auto repair. I've done a few tuneups and certainly have no lack of courage if it seems like I have a reasonable shot of getting a job done. I have not used a voltmeter for example and do not have an OBD to read codes. Hence I replaced the fuel filter so far on this car. I do not know how to check fuel at the rail (yet, so I figure to crank it and pull the plugs to see if they are covered in fuel), i actually spent quite a bit of time searching the site trying to figure that out to see if I could understand what the rail is. Right now my plan is this saturday to replace the distributor cap/wires and rotor and while Im in there pull the CPS and at least try to SEE if it looks funky. Im not going to purchase a new one quite yet. I also plan to clean the battery terminals and check the battery fluid levels. But this battery is about 5 years old so it may be worth just antying up for a new one. Something about this stalling feels "spark" related. Lastly i read about corrosion at the the point where the battery ground connects to the block. So Im going to look there and hope I find a bad connection. If all this doesnt cure it I will begin my search for the items you listed fuel pressure regulater and see what i can do. Thanks for the help it is greatly appreciated.
