Hi,

My timing belt tensioner exploded on my 2000 S70 non turbo and it messed up my valves on the first, third, and fifth cylinders. I am using www.tracystruesoaps.com/tutorials/850hg/p3.html as a guide to doing it. There are a few differences, but nothing too drastic so far. I was wondering if you guys had a tutorial more specific to the S70, of if you had any tips or ticks on doing it. I've never done anything involving internal engine work, but money is tight, and this is my only means of conveyance. Thank you.

is it possible that someone put a 1/2 inch nut on the exaust manafold? a 12mm wont fit and a 13mm is loose.

Anything is possible but the thread pitch would have been completely wrong and stripped the stud and/or the nut. When re-doing a head I go ahead and buy all new studs and nuts anyway since they are cheap so I would use any means necessary to get the old nut off or remove the old stud. About 20% of the studs come out of the head when you try to remove the nuts anyway.

Don't know about your engine but on the 94-98 850/x70 engines, there is a water pipe attachement that is tricky to spot and must be removed. Also the timing cover is connected to the head.

Thanks for the heads up, I got the intake off with only minor cursing, it will be interesting trying to get it back on. should i wire up the cams so they don't move when i take off the valve cover?

BTW that water pipe is in the back, obscured by the exhaust manifold.

I've done a few cam covers without wiring. Then the last one I did, I wired them on the front and used a home-fashioned tool for the rear, like in the write-up. It was much easier, both on removal (don't have to worry about cracking the cam guide slot) and reassembly (keeps the cams straight and cam cover parallel). That will be my method from now on. But you need to piece together that rear locking tool.

I just did this job on a 98 V70 using the tracy soap tutorial. It worked really well, no major differences I noticed.

The only changes I made were shortcuts (and not due to differences between v70/s70 and 850). I left the exhaust manifold in place (unbolted it from the head, but left it connected to the exhaust). I also didnt completely removing the timing belt, I had just changed it a month earlier.

Just take it easy and make a system to help you remember where you are. By the time you go to put something back together, you will be wondering what bolt goes where and when.

Good luck

@Clinton

oh my god, how did you get to the lower bolt on the water hose in the back by the exaust without totally removing the exaust manifold?
