Right, just pay attention for #2.

Basically, while you turn the crank (with a socket on a long extension, go in through the wheel well), there should be minimal resistance because the spark plugs are pulled (no compression). If you encounter resistance or hear a tap or clunk, then likely a piston is hitting a valve. Try to figure out where that is happening, exhaust or intake side, and give the cam on that side a little nudge one way or the other to move the valve(s) and give the piston clearance. Likely you will not encounter this, but pay attention to it as it would be a shame to ruin good valves now, if there are any left.

When the crank is on the mark, the #1 piston is a couple degrees from all the way up in the cylinder (i.e., from TDC), and the other pistons are all recessed somewhere or other in the cylinders. So that is why it is safe to move the cams wherever you want, as long as that crank is pegged on the timing mark.

ok.
being that this is my situation:

...I would've thought that I'd need the TB attached to do what you're saying...there's no chance of that working though as there wouldn't be/isnt any tension on it. So if i turn the crank wheel, will it even do what I need it to?

look like the tensioner pulley is beyond shot if it is in that shape, do the idler pulley also.

LamboSE:
You want to do the #2 and #3 *without* the timing belt on. That is why you have to watch out for piston-valve contact: the engine is out of time due to that jumped timing belt, so with the timing belt off you are going to put things back to where they should be. Only then do you reinstall the belt.

The pulley is indeed ruined but ignore the pulleys for now, you are dealing with three things: left (exhaust) cam and its sprocket, right (intake) cam and its sprocket, and the main crank pulley at the bottom of the engine. Read some instructions for changing the timing belt to familiarize yourself with these parts.

EDIT: You might want to keep the discussion of this the other thread you started, we are hijacking this one ...

OK - the harmonic balancer is completely effed - you need a new one. Once you get the new one and get it installed we can work from there on the timing.

Lee I think it is the tensioner pulley, not the harmonic balancer?

You are correct - My bad.

I was trying to remember the original post, I though this was the guy that tried to rotate the crank 2 revolutions without the timing belt on and his best hope was that the harmonic balancer came apart in the process.

aa_ezra wrote:Ok so finally got the timing belt on, extra hands made it possible.

how do you adjust the sprocket timing with the 10, 20 , 0 and 10 marks?

So here are my current timing marks rotated the engine clockwise about 3-4 times check alignment every time. crankshaft is spot on so is the exhaust cam. the intake is the only problem i think

is it good, or bad?
Could the fact that the cam sprokets themselves can be "rotated" slightly "about" the cam shafts when the bolts are loosened be the/a reason why one might be "off" by this much amount?
