S70 Foglight Conversion to EURO Style

Post by Juan62 »

I am posting this write-up for anyone who wants to convert their factory foglights to the European Style. Why? Because their are some write-ups on volvospeed.com that are not precise intsructions, and to add on Volvo factory foglamps with a European conversion. This forum has none and I hope Matthew will consider adding this to the database.

The following information are for 1998-2000 C/S/V70 models with factory Foglights who wish to convert to the European Style look. Note: Their maybe other Volvo models not listed, that can use this setup conversion.

Tools: T-torx #25 bit socket with 1/4 inch driver, pliers, small flatblade screwdriver (the ones that repairs eye glasses), flashlight, and sharpie if necessary.
Caution: Inspect all interior and exterior lighting for operation prior to this conversion.

1. Extend Steering wheel forward (towards you), lift up, and lock it.
2. Lock steering wheel (rotate left or right) until it locks.
3. Locate and remove 3-torx screws (underneath) steering column cover. Use flashlight if necessary.
4. Gently lift up the (top) steering column cover (do not remove it from steering column), then lift downward for the bottom cover. The bottom cover slides down, then towards you, and outward. Note: The rubber attachments for the turn/cruise/wiper blades. Gently slide the top and bottom covers from them.
5. Set the bottom cover and screws to the side.
6.Locate and remove 1 torx screw from the lower dash panel (drivers side). Release the Bonnet (Hood) mechanism. Gently lift and pull the dash panel outward (towards you), and disconnect the lower dash panel light. Set the panel and screw to the side.
7. Locate and remove Relay # 213 (Fog Lamps). Look deep under dashboard, near firewall, and pull out. Use flashlight. Note: I used a sharpie and marked the white and green casings for reference and when reassembling. Also, note the position the connectors are originally installed; 12 and 3 o'clock.
8. Gently pry open between the white and green casings using a flatblade screwdriver. Note: Remember how I marked the two lips with my sharpie. Set the white casing a side.
9. This step may take the longest (5-10 minutes). Note: Now is a good time to mark the new location for the connectors with the sharpie. New; 12 and 9 o'clock. Using your flatblade screw driver, insert between the connector and plastic. Gently pull out the connector with pliers. Repeat until the connector comes loose and can be easily removed with pliers.
10. Insert connector with pliers in new location: 12 and 9 o'clock. (I marked new location with sharpie).
11. Reinstall (snap) the green case into the white one. Note: Remember how I marked the two lips with the sharpie. It will realign.
12. Reinstall Relay 213 into socket connection (under dashboard). Align and push in, until locked.
13. Testing: Insert key into II position (do not start car). Turn on parks, then fog light switch, and inspect for operation. Next, Headlights, then Hi-Beams. Notice any difference? Note: I turned my Daytime Running Lights (DRL's) off. I don't use them.
14. Turn key off position and remove.
1414. Re-attach lower dash panel and dash panel light.
15. Re-attach upper and lower steering wheel cover. Start car and repeat step 13 to make sure.
Congrats! You're done...

All well and good but this only works for 98s and earlier
It will probably NOT work on 99s and 2000s.
Nice write up, clear and precise
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP
