Volvo 240 -1980 - Broken door handle

Post by Jtreehorn »

Yesterday, after locking mysefl out of my 1980 240, I borrowed a jimmy from the parking garage attendant and foolishly attempted to break into my own car. After several failed attempts, I noticed that the door handle had gone limp and clearly was no longer attached to any mechanism on the inside of the door.

Is this something that's relatively easy to fix, or am I looking at a minimum cost to get this fixed professionally?

Feeling a bit idiotic about it.

Thanks in advance!

Nick

Hi I'm surprised no one has replied to you. This ia a simple fix if you have basic skills and basic tools. First go to e bay. You can pay as little as 10.00 used, I did, or as much as $45 for a new one. Take off your interior door panel and it's obvious what needs top be removed and replaced. Should take a couple of hours at the most. Good luck

First find a used or new replacement handle on ebay or others.
Use a slimjim or other tool to open the door. Remove the door pull, inside handle, lock knob, and window crank to get to the door panel. There are plastic plugs in the pull covering the screws. The window crank cover has a plastic clip that is pushed out from the inside to remove and give access to the screw. There are several 1/4 turn plastic clips at the bottom of the map tray to remove.
Use a thin tool like a putty knife to go around the outside edge of the door panel and pop out the clips. Some may break when you do this.
When you get the panel off you will find there are two screws holding on the outside door handle. You will also need to remove some linkage to the lock and inside handle.
