If he's never done it before, one question is; how many Volvo engines has he touched? Not that I know how different an inline 5 cylinder is from what he's worked on, but it may be a good conversation to have. Also send him the write-up so he can study before getting under the hood.

If you do it yourself, wear a long sleeve shirt and some mechanics gloves to be on the safe side - burned skin sucks. Also, spray the bolts with PB Blaster a few times before you get in there over the course of a few days. Get ready to cuss and squirm when attacking those two bolts on the bottom-side of the manifold – you’ll need a few extensions or have to pull the fan to get at them.

Ok, for your non-turbo 98.
  • Volvo Crankcase Vent Hose (Inlet From Engine Oil Trap Side to the Cylinder Head) - 1271653
  • Volvo Crankcase Vent Hose (Bottom of Oil Trap Side to the Cylinder Head) - 8653339
  • Throttle body to oil separator box hose - 9125598
  • Oil trap - 1271988
  • Oil trap to cylinder head hose - 1271654
And pick up some clamps from an auto parts store. I don't like the Oetiker things that come on the kits with the car and are provided by FCP/dealers.

95-98 Turbos substitute 9125598 for 9179245 for anyone else's future reference. This is the one I had the biggest pain in the @$$ time with. Stupid cheap piece of crap URO hose.

Pulling the fan is ABSOLUTELY the way to go at those bottom 2 bolts. 23478924789278942789 times easier this time around instead of trying to get to them from the bottom.

Mechanic's seen a few Volvos before mine, but it doesn't help that my Volvo factory trained guy retired about 3 yrs. ago. I intend to print out Justin's guide and the assembled comments for my mechanic if I decide he's going to do the job.

Evan,
I also wrote a DIY PCV for my 98 V70 (non-turbo).

No happening this weekend. Based on Justin's past experience, I'm sending back the FCP aftermarket kit for all OEM. Haven't blown the RMS yet. Any problem with me leaving the dipstick loose until I can get the repair done -- earliest next weekend and more likely week after that -- to relieve a bit of crankcase pressure?

Ok, just did this, it went awesome! Thanks for the writeup!

Couple tips I came across.. The bolt on the bracket from the block to the manifold was easy to get to, you need a helper to bring the extension and 2 u joints up and you use your right hand to put it on the bolt, then they turn the ratchet. I used one u joint and a wobble extension as that is what I had on hand. The bracket gets removed to take the oil box off but you need to leave it loose to realign the bolt to the manifold later.

My mileage and power problem seem to have been due to the elbow on the left side of the intake being rotted in two.

It took me 4 hours taking my time, waiting for the engine to cool, cleaning up, etc. I was expecting something a million times worse but the directions were spot on and I hade no issues.

Ps... The car is still slow off the line but is RIDICULOUS when at speed.

Cheat, mine's a slug til about 30 mph.

This video was with my foot on the floor the whole time. (ignore my music - it was turned down but still overpowers everything ;) )

I counted 0-60 in somewhere around 8 seconds. Not bad for an old car ;)

The wrench with a closed-end ratchet at the end makes a HUGE difference for how easy it is to get the 2 lower intake manifold bolts off in that you can slip it up under there instead of trying to attack things from the bottom of the car with extensions and swivel joints. That was such a pain.
