Yea, it's a '96 with over 200k, the 14mm bolts were hard to break.
It's pretty much exactly how everyone henceforth has described. I chose to take the fan out. I can't see how it's possible without removing it. You who didn't are true auto-magicians.
I took out as much as I could, at risk of not putting it back together right. Which was the hardest part of the whole thing.
Many thanks to Tina who documented her starter replacement, and which I leaned heavily on to get this done. I'll post this on that topic as well, with photo captions.

The only thing I can add...I found it easier to take the entire fan assembly out, shroud and all.
Those lower screws that hold the fan to the fan shroud are a pain in the ass....especially in the crusty midwest where they pave the roads with salt. IF you remove the entire assembly, it's just a couple (or 3) bolts at the top and the entire assembly lifts out.
I think the one time I changed one out going that route was about an hour. These starters are actually fairly strong comparing to other cars that I've owned.
