oil trap box and head gasket problems. Are they related?

Post by sallymckeever »

I have a 2007 Volvo S40. It has 51000 miles on it. A few months ago I had to have the oil trap box replaced in it . It is under recall by Volvo so the repair costs were covered. Now, my head gasket needs replaced. This is not covered by Volvo. I am concerned as to why my 07 car with only 51000 miles now needs a new head gasket. I want to know if the oil trap box going bad could have led to the stress cracks in my head gasket. There is only one Volvo dealership here in Hawaii and I dont know that I can fully trust them yet to tell me if the oil trap box problem caused my head gasket problem. It is quite expensive to fix so please let me know.

What are the symptoms that you are experiencing that lead you to believe that you need a new head gasket?

the same time that the oil trap box went bad, the coolant overflow kept going low. Volvo fixed the oil trap box but my coolant continued to go low even though I kept filling it so I took it to another mechanic shop and the mechanics replaced it. Then my car started stuttering and dying out on me. I took it back in and was told that I had coolant and oil mixed together and that my head gasket is leaking. I took my car back to volvo and they confirm that it is the head gasket but say it has nothing to do with the oil trap box that they replaced under recall.

Even if your PCV produced some pressure (and this would likely cause oil leaks) it is highly unilkely that the head gasket would be affected, unless the head gasket was poorly fitted at the factory.

Did your car overheat at any time prior to this?
