Odd S80 ABS issue.

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Odd S80 ABS issue.

Post by Matty Moo »

99 s80. It isn't my car, so I can't physically look at it, just trying to gather ideas or some guidance, it's one I really haven't run into before.

After a few miles, the abs/stc lights come on. BUT, they instantly go away if the car is turned off then restarted. Then they come back after a few miles. The ABS module is fine, since I fixed it and tested it.

The typical problem is for them to be randomly intermittent or just stay on all the time. BUT, it's always after a few miles. I'm stumped. And the number one problem I always run into is that nobody wants to pay to get the car scanned.

I have had a few cars with that warning lamp behavior that were driven fast with min-spare or had damaged tone ring at one of the wheels. The module is tolerant of wheel speed differential but there is a limit.
They don't also notice modulation when stopping?

Check your speed sensors, they sometimes trip this error message.

None of the above. The lady finally emailed me back today.

Intermittent ABS and brake lights....when this happens the gauges on the instrument cluster fail, the car runs rough and is loud.

I've been researching s80 ABS issues for over a year. I've spoken to numerous owners at length and read everything in the world that there is to read.

My conclusion....these cars are an absolute mess of electrical issues. There is no cut and dry way of figuring them out and even throwing thousands of dollars at them sometimes does nothing.

I go back and forth on dealing with modules out of s80's...most of the time I find nothing wrong with them, especially if its an 8619538. The other part numbers you get the typical cracked joints. You fix it and test it....then the customer installs it and is back where they were originally with a dash full of lights.
