HELLO I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO A SHOP AND HE SAID IT MIGHT BE THE OS AND MIGHT HAVE TO REPLACE IT. THE CAR RUNS FINE NO PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER. HE SAID REPLACING IT MIGHT TURN OFF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT MIGHT NOT. THE OS COSTS 280.00. I DO NOT WANT TO SPEND THAT MONEY IF IT DOES NOT TURN THE LIGHT OFF. IS THERE ANYWAY TO RESET THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT? I AM AT A TOTAL LOSS. PLEASE HELP.

Have a look at my thread

It may be related to ETM as well....
I will give you more info later because I will clean my TB and see if it's related.
Were you on the highway when it came on ?

WELL IT HAS BEEN ON FOR MONTHS HAD IT CHECKED BUT HAS BEEN RUNNING FINE. ITS MY WIFE'S CAR SO I DO NOT KNOW WHEN OR WHERE IT CAME ON AT.
Apparently the most common problem with the check engine light evap code is a loose or faulty gas cap, you may wish to start there. Another problem is if you top off you gas tank after the nozzle shuts of you run the risk of liquid fuel getting into the evap system and this will set the code too.
I had the same problem (code indicated fault with evap system) last year on my 99 V70. After spending several hundred $$ at a private mechanic for a purge valve, then a charcoal canister (check engine light repeatedly came on after a couple of days, but the engine ran fine) I took the car to the Volvo dealership and they diagnosed it as a 'negative ground wire problem'. They fixed it and I havent' had the problem since. So my advice is to take it to a Volvo dealership where they have the proper diagnostic equipment.

I have a 1998 V70 with 162K and a 1999 S70 with 68K. Check engine lights come on and off randomly in both cars. My mechanic calls it the "welcome to your Volvo light"! When it first happened on the older car, I was worried - went to the dealer who ran codes and was told it needed some serious work. I couldn't afford it. That was 90,000 miles ago and all is still fine. Since then, the light has come on and gone off maybe four times for no apparent reason - sometimes staying on for 8,000 miles and then going off. The trick here in MA is to have it be off at inspection time! Invest in some black duct tape (enough to cover the damn service light too) and drive on - unless there are other signs besides the light that things are amiss. Kind of like arthritis....
