Advice - year & #miles used S40

Post by volvogirl2011 »

Greetings! I'm searching for a used S40 in Dallas. I've only driven lexus and infiniti in the past and am unsure what "limits" (year or mileage) I should be looking for. I'm interested in buying a used car that I won't have to pour a lot of money in as it gets older (my primary question would be, what would the best case scenario be for year + miles between 2007 - now). I'm hoping to stay around $15k. I'm not a huge "car" person, so extra horsepower doesn't matter to me, but I do enjoy amenities like leather seats, moonroof. My primary concern is buying something that I will have to put a lot of money in soon for maintenance and repairs. Thank you for the help!!

I really can't help you with newer models since I have a 2000 S40, but I will say that if you do have problems and are not a diy'er it can be quite pricey from the dealer and even from local indies. Something that new should run perfect and be clean inside and out. Any signs of engine oil, gunk build up would be a no no for me if I was going to spend that much on a car. Look for private sellers that have dealer records, or maybe even pre-owned. At least you will have some type of warranty for the car in the case of something going wrong.

If you want the most reliable S40, go with the FWD non-turbo model. It will run forever and you can definitely get a low mileage one for under 15K.
