Ok, I have a 96 960 and tonight when I got in the car, I smelled gas. I went to Wendy's with a friend and the whole ride we smelled gas. Sometimes faint, others strong. I stepped out to see if I could see any leaks, but I have absolutely no knowledge about cars and don't know what else to check. My gas gauge is broken and I have to go by the pedometer reading...350 miles before I have to fill up (at absolute zero-almost) and I only had driven 132 miles since my last fill up. It took 12 gallons! So I believe there is a leak somewhere... Could someone please tell me what I should do? I have read the other posts about gas leaks and didn't really find any great information that I could understand.
Thanks a LOT!

Agree with Andreas...my 740 had smell and no visiable leak. The filter is beside the pump under the driver side passenger seat area. It rusts out.
If you are lucky it will only be the filter...but it could be the connector between filter and pump..things get complicated and expensive then. Look on other forums such as volvoworld, swedish bricks as they should have the photo of the units. If you feel handy you can do the work yourself but probably best to get a garage to do it. Be somewhat suspicious of garage where they say both filter and pump is shot. Good luck.

look around a bit you should be able to find where it is leaking. follow fuel lines, fuel filter, and look at bung on top of tank through inspection plate, also look at fuel rail and injectors.

I smelled gas - my mechanic replaced the fuel sender. He said it was leaking. Seems to have helped.
