Newbie Question: Check Engine Light

My girlfriend bought a 1995 850 about a month ago. Check engine light just came on (around 112k miles). It's running great. I've never touched a volvo before; so before I start turning wrenches, any good advice on trouble shooting? How easy is it to reset the light? If you need more info, what might help? Thanks in advance.

I've got an 1998 S70 that I took to Autozone and they reset it for me. They said the main reason the light comes on is when you don't shut your gas cap completely or the cap may not provide the needed seal. Be sure you get about three clicks from the cap and try a local parts store to see if they will reset it. I even had the dealer reset my service light for no charge.

Check out the "Volvo Repair Database" at the tp of the page. Autozone cannot reset a '95

ODBII was a mid year change on the 95. It could have either system. If there is a connector under the change holder in the center console you have ODBII.

ODB for early 95 and prior is in the database. ODBII will need the code read for the diagnostic code.

Read the codes (by scan tool or black diagnostic boxes under the hood, depending on your '95) and report the code back here. Don't simply assume it's the gas cap, although it could be.
