Thanks for the update. Wow, that's crazy! The wrong oil ruined an engine...

I'm trying to think to all the places I've had the oil changed now.... I sure hope this is the case for me because $4k for a new engine is more than I think my car is even worth

I had this exact surging on my 2001 with 205K that was there when i bought it at 189K. i recently did the pcv system changover due to proactive ocd during that i did the elec throttle cleaning with seafoam, etb cleaner and brass brush and a new gasket. there was the dark crud, but i thought it wasnt bad slightly open good spring. after putting it all back together and it actually started!! my idle smothed out at stops and no surge. this is the one time something actually changed dramatically. iw ould reccommend to all to do the throttle body cleaning. dont bother trying to getting the 4 bolts from below. do yourself a favor and remove the electric cooling fan 3 connectors and 2 bolts to give you room, saves the knuckles and the childrens ears ....son of a b****. although you need to disconnect the connector lower r front under. since i had my intake manifold out i had room. the electric connector for my throttle body would not pass between the starter and block. so you may not have much play to spray and clean. again this was the most dramatic repair ive ever done. do it if you have the issue. it shouldnt take more than 1.5-2 hours total
