:?: I will be driving down the road and the car will just die. After a minute or two the car will start again. There dose not seem to be any other pattern. Sometimes this will not happen for several days. Sometimes it will happen 20 times in a day. I was told that it could be one of four things: ignition power stage, fuel pump relay, suppressor relays or the distributor. I have checked the distributor and replaced all but the fuel pump relay ( which I can't seem to find, but have a new one to install). If anyone has any sugestions PLEASE HELP! Going crazy! P.S. this problem has been going on for about a year. Just replaced fuel pump relay and so far no problems.

Look at the rpm-meter when it dies. If it is going straigh to zero when the engine dies, you have a ignition problem. It could then be the power stage or the hall-sensor. Lately it has been several replies talking about bad wiring close to the hall sensor. Both for the hall sensor and the power stage it is typical that it dies and can be started some minutes later. After that it will maybe be running for a month.

Thank you, the rpm-meter does not go straight to zero. it goes down with the slowing of the cars speed. This problem has been going on for about a year with about a week or two break here and there.

See my posting of March 20th...sounds like the fuel pump relay. I can send you photos for the fix.

Contents of March 20th:

This item may help those in need...I have an 87 740 that has been experiencing periodic stalling while driving. Car has always started good. After sitting roadside for a few moments the car will start after turning over several times. I replaced plugs, wires and cap..still occurred.

The problem was found in the fuel pump/ignition computer relay found under the ashtray with the fuses. Upon taking out relay and removing the relay cover I found three suspect soldering points on the circuit board..they break down with age. I resoldered the points and replaced the relay and the car has not stalled since. Working great.

I purchased a new relay for $80.00 CDN and keep it in my glove box in case more solder joints breakdown when I am on the road.

Do you need to take apart the console?

Go to swedishbricks...it has some photos etc.

http://www.swedishbricks.net/700900FAQ/ ... Pump_Relay

I am finding that this and bricks are the best forums for Volvos.

Peter
