Windshield Scratches from wipers

Post by Ben850 »

I've been searching some other forums as well as google for a reasonably simple, and hopefully inexpensive fix for windshield wiper pattern scratches.
I want to try to get it done without power tools if possible.

So far the best idea I've heard would be a rubbing/polishing compound of some sort, followed by Rain-x Extreme glass cleaner.
Does anyone have a product or method they have found to take care of theese wiper scratches? They are not extremely deep, they just seem to be a result or worn and dirty blades.

Inexpensive: Mecquire's Ultimate rubbing compound is good...Wal-mart just under $9.00
Acetone: Autozone under $7.00 (for glass only) no plastic, or paint.
There is a product (forgot the name) that used on my glass top surface stove from Lowes (white bottle) that removes pot stains/spills that were burnt on the outer edges of the glass....this stuff works the best for all glass surfaces, but over $10.00

Unless the scratch(es) are very light, you can forget about it.
NOTHING really works, scratched glass is scratched glass...period

Thanks, I'll look for the Mcguires. I do have acetone which I use to get glue and paint overspray off. I assume that would be for cleanup and/or pre-clean.
Thanks again, the scratches are minor and I'm pretty sure a compound will at least help.

Regarding bad scratches in car glass and windshield wiper scratches, which aren't always as bad depending on how long they ran without rubber, apparently something works according to this video!

I wanted to thank everyone for the input. I did see this video before I made the original inquiry, hence my including "without power tools".
What eventually happened was, I tried the Mcquires solution. It simply is not possible by hand. Maybe with a small buffer like the one used in the video.

Shortly after that attempt, the car was in an accident that deployed the airbags. A replacement windshield was now needed. I pulled one from the junk yard, but noticed after cleaning it up at home, it was no better than the one I was trying to clear up in the first place.
In the end, I decided to pay the extra $70. for new glass. They were going to charge $150.00 to come and install the salvage piece.
Sometimes it is worth it to be sure things are as they should be.
