CD skipping problem -98 s70

Post by vawils »

Just got a used replacement radio - SC 816 so I could have the CD player. Sems to work fine but the cd skips frequently when I hit a small bump - pretty annoying. Know this can happen with CDs but this is much worst then my other car with a cd player. Is this normal for this cd player or should I try to exchange it? Anyone have a similar problem with this radio. Thanks.

You can try cleaning the lens with one of those CD's that has a brush on it. You just pop it in and it "plays" for a few minutes. I did this too but not really much improvement. Store bought CD's did play better however than those I burned myself. Seems that how you burn the discs makes a difference too....make sure and do "disc at once," and "finalize" the burn. But still, store bought did better....but still over some bumps it would still skip.

The best thing I did about this issue was started using an iPod with the USA-Spec iPod adapter, routing it straight into the SC-816 head-unit through the CD-changer connector. I can control it with the radio knobs and the sound is truly great, and no more dealing with inserting CD's or dealing with their skipping issue. Regular iPod and Nano both work with it. Matthew has a write-up on installing one and I believe where you can get one in another section if you're interested in listening to your tunes this way in your car.

I'm not the expert on Volvo Cd players or anything but I have done quite a few installs on various cars over the years and one of the key things to look for if it skips when you drive but not when sitting still is movement of the unit. With aftermarket units there is usually a way to anchor the thing in the dash better, sometimes with a bracket or metal strip on the back. If you don't care about the aftermarket look you can buy a pretty good JVC unit for about 200 that plays mp3s and cds and all kinds of stuff. I had one in a big rough riding truck and it never skipped. Skipping is not normally acceptable. You must understand that I have an 850 with the factory(810 i think) head and changer in the trunk and I can literally jump railroad tracks and it won't skip. The only time I ever had skipping is when I burned a cd with too many songs. Some cd players have trouble playing overlong cds (70mins). I would say it isn't normal then. It is either in there loose or wrong or is a bad one. It might not be a bad idea to have someone else drive it and you sit in the passenger seat and look for vibration of the console and area the player is mounted. Easier and better perspective than trying to watch while driving.

I agree with you MIJ, mine is skipping also when I play copied CD's. I had very bad experience with Maxell in particular. I'm looking for a cable also, but I'm wondering if it will work with a simple MP3 player(Sandisk).

There is an RCA cable in-put on the USA-Spec unit...that will work with any music source. I highly recommend it!

That or the PA11-HON I believe. Either will work. The PA11 is just an upgraded version that is actually better for the P2 cars, but will work on mine and yours too. Check this out (maybe someone has it for cheaper, but I got mine here): http://www.crutchfield.com/S-cusV7xVX2n ... 581PA11HON

So, now if you get an iPod in the future you can use it with this as well. When we go on trips, my son unplugs my iPod ane plugs his Nano in and we can listen to his music for awhile. There's a switch on it too that allows a few different functions with the iPod...I love mine!

If you will never have an iPod, there actually may be some other options for you that are cheaper. Which head-unit do you have. I know you probably have something newer than my SC-816.
