Hey Guys,
I just bought a 2000 S40 for my daughter a few weeks ago. We made this buy because we just bought a XC90 2006 and feel in love with Volvos!
The problems I am having with the 2000 S40 is very bad. It drove off the lot fine, but about 15 minutes later, could barely pull its own weight down the road. Very week on power and gas pedal to the floor. Almost like it was tied to a big truck pulling down the road! Very week!
The trans seemed to be fine, and it runs like a top, other than when it starts this problem (which is on again/off again. After we stopped and it cooled down, it started driving fine again.
More info on the car:
Check engine light on, All fluids are correct, codes are P0336 (camshaft pos. sensor)and P0341..... Pending codes P0335B and P0341.
I did notice that when it was running week, that the exhaust pipe behind the engine and against firewall (after the turbo area) was cherry red hot!
Could these problems be Cat.Converter? What would be my first thing to look into? Any ideas on the power problem? Thanks in advance guys and Im glad to be a new member.
Extreme loss in power...Stalls and very week
More info and where I am today:
The exhaust behind the turbo would glow blood red like the sun....so I changed the Cat Converter. At the same time as this work, I also cleaned the MAF sensor. Today I did more work....from other sites and info, I started knocking down more issue that may cause these problems. I bought and changed out the Crankshaft Pos.Sensor and also istalled new plugs. The problem actually got worse....I was however able to catch the car in the act on the computer at a friends home.
Codes now say:
P0341- Camshaft Pos A Circut range PERF Bank!
P0335B- Crankshaft Pos. Sensor AA Circut Malfunction
P0101- MAF Sensor
P0351- Ignition Coil A Primary-Secondary Circut Malfunction
P0300B- Random Multipal Misfire
Quite a list, especially since i just put in a new Crankshaft Pos. Sensor??......Any thoughts guys?? Thanks in advance for any info

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
Some codes force the car into limp home mode to discourage your driving it. When you did your repair did you erase the the codes? If not the car will be in limp home mode.
Bill.

Forgive my lack of knowledge...but how is this done? Is this done on the code reader...or are we talking about unhooking the battery? Im pretty new at this, so my knowledge is not all is should be.
Added to the list of things done...I pulled each coil pack off to see if they where getting spark or not, and found that the plug closes to the timing gears(or passenger side) and the plug that its attached to (furtherest away to the right) had no spark. My next parts to replace....

When you read the codes, you can erase them using the same tool. Not sure if disconnecting the battery will work for certain, but if you do, leave it off for a bit. Also, the coil pack it bad. You could test that by swapping the pack from 3 and 4 and checking for spark on both cylinders again. No spark on 3, then bad coil.
