My 1998 V70 Lock Up Solenoid has failed, prompting a call for transmission replacement. Any work arounds out there I could try? THe car has 160,000 and spending $3,500 to fix is un appealing. :(
Thanks for any help.

You could try replacing just the solenoid, but that'd be kind of a gamble. Volvo rebuilt tranny's are not that great either. I'd call around and see who would be willing to rebuild it for you. You could also opt for a 5-spd swap, for about a 1/3 of the price the dealer quoted you, though most people don't like that idea.

Someone wrote about the tranny solenoid in another post...saying often problems disappear without a tranny break-down or swap. I'll try to look for it and post back. The solenoid in question, I believe goes into the side of the tranny so you don't have to tear it down.

Never mind...got the information on the "piston servo," but it only applies to 5 speeds so it wouldn't matter here.

Good luck and I hope you find the best solution for yourself.
