I have a 1996 940G Turbo 2.3L. This is the Non-US version as I am stationed in South Korea. This car is identical to the 1995 model but with 30 less horsepower.
The car has been running great for the last year or more. A few weeks ago it developed intermittent stumbling/dying. Until it finally would not start. As the Volvo dealership is outrageous (Volvo will not let independent mechanics buy parts, forcing you to go to the dealership) in price I took it to a local mechanic. He suggested a new fuel pump. I brought him one from FCP. He replaced it and the car started and seemed to run fine. Then it began to die at idle. Only after the car had warmed up some. I thought it might be the relay but after the car dies it fires right back up. From what I understand the relay would need some time to cool off before the car starts again. But now the fuel pump is very loud. I can hear it from the driver's seat when the car is running. I hear a whining then it seems to bog down then jumps back up. It's definitely getting worse.
The car has no issues starting. It fires up everytime and idles fine in park. After a few minutes of driving it will die at a stop light, unless I keep my foot on the gas. There is also an intermittent Exclamation point that lights up on the dash. But there is no particular rhyme or reason to when the light comes on. Sometimes when I go up a hill. Could this be a Fuel Pressure Regulator? Or could it be something as simple as the mechanic failed to hook a line up properly or a line is pinched?
Any thoughts?

Hi
A few years ago I bought a 96 model and it started playing up in a similar way. What happened was that it started OK, drove off, and after about 300 yards started to cough and sputter and then died. It started straight away again, idled OK and then drove off and the same thing happened... sometimes after a couple of hundred yards and sometimes went a bit further but not far.
This nearly drove me and the mechanics CRAZY and went on for a couple of weeks. Changed filters, checked fuel pumps, replaced the rear one (they have two) and so on UNTIL WE FOUND IT!
Apparently at around that time the petrol tanks were lined with a sprayed on coating (not sure what it was, maybe bituminized)
and after years it breaks down and bits were floating around and blocking the system. When it stopped, it must have unblocked enough to let some petrol through to get going again, and then it stopped. This is no joke - it's true. I know this is not a nice suggestion but we had to remove the tank, cleaned it out and found the 'gunk'. replaced it with a used later model that hadn't been lined. Apparently they only did this for a while - Im sure more knowledgable ones on the forum will know about this.
