Help!!! What would cause this???

well right now my shop says that i probably fried an exhaust valve which i didn't even know was possible since it's a solid piece of metal... or how that would even happen.... but i guess they are going to take the head off and send it to someone to machine the part and grind it back i guess... which i going to be a three day process making it almost a week without my car :( and prob cost around $2,000.... moral of the story???... don't fry your valves!!!
