csss98 wrote:Hi guys, Thanks for getting back to me. I didn't understand most of what you both said. Ben, when you say ECC is that what I think is the Control Module? I always used ECC to mean the entire electronic control system-meaning all of it's parts--sensors, fans, relays etc-- not one major part. Where is it in the car and what does it look like? Can I see it without removing parts? If I look for it on e-Bay, EXACTLY what do I call it? I'm not much of a DIY gal, but I try. Lee, What is a capacitator, where is it and where is the controller case so I can look for a smoke smudge. After all that, I still don't know what to do about the blower fan. Should I have the Volvo indy install it as he suggested along with the "126" sensor? Do I first invest the $100 on e-bay and have the indy install the ECC (still not sure if that's synonymous with control module). Please advise. Also, do you have any idea why my "A" computer seems to be malfunctioning? Is it malfunctioning? How do I check my check engine light? Thank you.
The ECC controller, as stated, comes out of the dash quite easily. You are correct that it is a "system" but the control module is the heart of the system and all signals begin and end at the controller. To remove the controller first remove the radio which is done by depressing tabs on the face of the radio that are - more or less - next to the bass slider and number 6 preset. I just use the key to press them in and then let them pop out. At that point the tabs act like handles to slide the radio out. The wiring harness for the radio is long enough that you don't need to unplug it.

If you do unplug it you will need to have your 4 digit radio code to get it to function again.

Once the radio is out of the dash it is simply a matter of reaching through the hole where the radio lives and then pushing the controller out of the dash. It will put up some resistance at first and then just pop out.

I don't have any pictures of the bank of capacitors but it is obvious when it (they) has (have) blown up. They are typically black cylindrical objects that are give or take the diameter of a dime and maybe an inch tall.

The burn smudge will be much more obvious an the top of the inside of the case since it looks like a black burned smoke stain. It takes removing a few screws to get the cover off of the case.

The temp sensor (1-2-6 error code) is above the grab bar and its error may or may not be related to a controller problem. Other than the blinking lights it is not a terminal error that will shut the system down. As such, I would put that error on a lower priority.

Thank you again. First, let me say, I'm very impressed with your writing skills. With that and your mechanic skills I'm very lucky to have you both guiding me. Lee, it might take a day or 3, but I'm going to follow your directions re removing the control unit for inspection. I also now know I must have the exact part number if I decide to replace it or was I given wrong info? I didn't see Ben's guy on E-BAY. There were a few units for about $75-$90, but limited return policies with exchange only. I phoned one upstate NY used part dealer (found on same list on E-BAY) He wants $350 for the used unit with a lifetime guarantee. Whose life?? My life? the part's life? The company's life which could go out of business next month? Of course you don't really have to answer that. Ben, if you read this, I hope you find the receipt so I can contact your guy with the $99 2 yr warranty. Ben, regarding your point that there's a known defect in the 94 unit, why wasn't there a recall? If there's a known defect, shouldn't the replacement be free from the dealership? Also, If there's a known defect, aren't I taking a big risk buying a used part that hasn't been refurbished? I guess I'll report back after inspecting the unit so we can figure out whether I should have the ECC replaced, the blower replaced, both or neither. Should I start a new topic regarding my A computer? Mostly all I got from each port on the "A" computer was a steady red light.
