S60 Liscense plate lights

I have a 2003 S60. We failed inspection for the rear plate lights being out. In trying to diagnose the problem, when I open the trunk, the lights come on. When I get the trunk about 75% closed, the plate lights go out and stay out when it is closed. I noticed a clip the wiring harness that goes from the trunk into the rear trunk lid. This clip hooks onto the armature of the trunk hinge. Is there a switch of some sort in there? or is this just a clip to hook the wires to the hinge only? I am wondering if i have a broken wire and will need to replace the wiring harness, or if it is a bad switch in that section of wire? Anyone have a similar problem?
