Hey guys, I'm having a unique problem here.
The left rear door does not lock all the time. It only locks sometimes and sometimes I have to manually lock it. But, it has no problem unlocking. It unlocks every time I try to unlock it.
Did anyone ever experience this before?
Any input is much appreciated.
Thanks.

I have a similar problem except that it is with the the driver's side door. This makes it a little more troublesome to lock the doors. When the door lock button is up it still alarms the car. My mechanic told me that it was a bad actuator; it would cost me $200 to have it repair door. There is only one problem with his diagnosis; the doors on the S80 do not have actuators.
There is a door lock cable and a cylinder that pushes up the lock knob. I suspect that what my mechanic was telling me that it was a pain to remove the inside paneling on the door and that he or his people did not want to do it, and therefore he quoted a price that he knew that I would not be willing to pay for the convenience of locking the doors.
According to the diagrams of the inside of the door, the inside paneling seems relatively easy to take off. I suspect that I will find either the cable is dirty, or no longer properly lubricated (WD40). The worst case will be that something is wrong with the cylinder. All of these parts will add up to be about $12. I will take this project on myself, because it seems that the problems can easily be identified and remediated.
If you are not particularly handy, I'm certain that you can find someone who can investigate the rear door problem and should be able to repair the problem for a little money and a bit of time.
I hope that this helps.

just curious, what do you mean by no actuators?
If you have automatic, powered locks, even if there's a cable and an eccentric cam instead of the kind that has a pushrod, isn't there still some electric actuator/solenoid/motor that needs to rotate the cam, and that electric part could fail?

Dr.Bob,
I think you'll find your mechanic is probably correct. There is an actuator but it's part of the lock assembly and you have to replace the whole unit. Same with the rear door.

I need to share this 2001 S80 door lock re-opening experience:
After 2 years of annoyance and assuming loor latch fault(s) , picked up a hint on a forum that it could be the computer outsmarting itself. -- basically it said that if the computer "remembers" a state of "unlock"; after locking it returns to the prior state, in this case unlock.
Sequence that seems to work is: (at least so far- )
With car still running, use armrest door lock to lock all doors, switch off etc, open drivers door which leaves the balance of locks still engaged, close and lock normally. Once or twice I had to manually lock drivers door with good old fashioned push button down whilst holding extern handle out.
System appears to now remember it should be locked and doest reopen 5 minutes after you leave the car.
Cant guarantee there are not other faults- but its a no cost no interfenece remedy that has worked for me.

Locks on the S80 must be a 'thing' - I sometimes have the issue where it just won't lock the doors at all (either with remote, or the key.) - They lock, but then all pop up again. My longest lasting solution was to remove the battery negative for five minutes, then manually locked the drivers door and reconnected the ground. Once the ground was back on, a run of 5 lock/unlocks with the remote, all locks balanced and have yet to have this problem again. Probably not going to fix the problem you have but wanted to add to the locking thread.
