Long Volvo history, but this is a new one for me...

Post by applcor »

Hi Folks, New to this forum, but been foolin' round with bricks for a few decades. Used to sell 15 to 20 a year, kinda a hobby, tied up with a 'Volvo Clinic' and sold a ton of parts too. Used to buy salvage to support my habit..... Then life got in the way of my affliction ;-)

Bambi killed my mom's brick last week, she really wanted the '84 245 5spd. put back on the road, but a front clip fr that girl is tough to find nowadays...to bad too - it was just broken in good at 211K. I put her in my standby '90 245 (Only 128K!), but my 74 yr old Mom Hates the auto - so if anyone knows of a decent clip for an 84, I'm lookin!

Anyhow, we still have 9 Volvos in the family. Here's a new one for ya.... I just got done with install on an Oil seperator kit (had noticed some seepage round the filler cap), an oil change, and a trans 'top off' (3.5 qt drain and fill) on my 1998 V70 AWD. When I put it back on the crete and went to back it out the overdrive light is blinking at me. It has 174K on it, but I've been doing the service since 42K and the trans shifts smooth as silk....

I know all the common ailments on these, but it obviously had something to do with the service. I checked all the plugs and such, tried rowing the shifter, etc....but it won't clear. Any brilliance round here on this one??

Welcome to the forum.

Since you've already tried the rowing the shifter trick, at this point, you need to go have the codes read by a Volvo dealer. A standard OBDII tool that anyone else has will not read transmission codes.

Let us know what you find and hopefully we can help you from there.

Thanks for the reply! I realize I will prob need to get a stealer involved, (especially on the 98, I'll get the Check engine reset too.) but was just hoping someone else had a similar experience, that could steer me in the right direction so I could get it fixed prior to getting it reset.

Well, sometimes these cars just hickup. A lot of indi shops have the software to read and reset the codes on the S/V70's. I'd try one of them first and would reset before I planed on work. That's just me.

Indeed, It will be an Indy shop, the closest Stealer is 50 minutes from here. I am Not planning on work, just wanted to see if this might be a common occurence. I thought i might have bumped the Anti' when I was torking around on it. Been a few years since I did an oil seperator an I did the rear came seal too since it was seeping, although in hind sight, that was prob just a symptom of the partially stopped up seperator.
