Winter tires and sizes.

Post by yav969 »

OK so my V90 came from the previous owner with 205/65/15 tires on all four. He also gave a set of 2 Blizzack 195/65/15 and I have a set of 185/65/15 snows from my now deceased 740. My inclination is to put the 185's on the rear and the 195's in the front. I am assuming the PO was using the Blizzack 195 in the rear and the 205 all seasons in the front. Any problem mixing tire treads and widths?

All those different size tires have different outside diameters. By mixing tires with different dismeters it can affect the ability of the ABS system to effectivly control the antilock function.

Unless the other set of snows are also relatively new Blizzaks, you'll have the added excitement (on snow, no less) of trying to control the car with different sized tires, with potentially very different amounts of traction on snow and ice. As you probably know, the Blizzaks have a silcone rubber layer that is very soft, and provides tremendous grip on ice and snow.

When approaching the rear end of a Mercedes full of lawyers on a snowy highway at 30 mph, you'll want to stop 3 ft away form the car rather than 3 ft into it. Sell your old snow tires from the 740 on eBay or at a yard sale, make a swing for the kids, plant geraniums in them, or something, and buy a second set of Blizzaks that are the same size as those from the PO. RWD Volvos provide more than enough excitement on snow and ice without mixing tires.
Frequently wrong, never in doubt.
