Door lock problem, 1998 Volvo S70

Post by krom »

I recently purchased a 1998 Volvo S70 with 116,000 miles. The front driver side door was functioning properly until a friend unfamiliar with volvos tried to lock the door (with the engine off and without the key) by forcibly pressing the lock. I know that volvos have a safety feature that prevents the door from locking without the key. However, due to the excessive force on the lock, the door can be locked from the inside/outside without using the key. The door can also be locked and unlocked using the key. My main problem is with unlocking the door with the remote control. Before the incident I was able to open the driver side door with the remote control and the other doors. The remote control is only able to lock the driver side door but not open it. I can hear the mechanical parts inside the door functioning when I press the unlock button on the remote. However, only the other doors open at the second press of the unlock button. Should I replace the part that operates the lock on the driver side door? If so which is the main defective part? Thanks for your help.

You probably need a new door lock/actuator mechanism. Not uncommon, they fail all by themselves

As JrL mentioned you most likely have either damaged the mechanical or the electrical mechanism which controls the doors.

Volvo's dont allow you to close the front door by pushing down on the door lock on the front drivers as well as the front passengers... only way to get away with it is open the rear door and close it that way.

I have and actuator from a few 850's but not sure if they would fit your car... maybe call your dealer and look up the part number or message me.

I just replaced it on my 2000 s70. Window problems fixed, door lock not. You can buy them cheap on-line, but I am not sure that there isn't something else going on. I don't want to get into the door to replace the motor or anything.

Just pushing the button shouldn't have damaged anything. You can lock and close the door manually all day long.
The lockout prevention feature just unlocks the drivers door as soon as it closes, IF the key is in the ignition.
It also prevents locking by remote, but again, only IF there's a key in the ignition.

That said, these things are known for wearing out after 10 plus years.
You probably need a new latch/lock mechanisim. Join the Club!

Funny, my locks seem to act up more when its warm. During the summer, only 2 doors open, but during the winter all 4 usually open. I guess its time to buy a new lock actuator...well, 2 really.

It could be history by now. My two rear door locks were broken by proactive passengers pulling on the door handle when central unlocking by myself... the driver. With passengers on board you have little control of what they will do, no way to avoid.

This is my issue. Those actuators are expensive - got one from a junkyard. New they're 150.

Which 2 doors for you in warm weather? Mine are the driver's side.

The rear actuators are a bear to remove....

Just replace a couple on my daughters S70. Both were drivers side. What actually happens is the little motor inside gets weak over the years. Yes they do show failure more in the summer for some reason. Those little motors are real strong. I'd say they can shoot a marble 100 feet. Once they get worn and weak, they can only shoot the marble about 60 feet. That isn't enough strength to control the lock.

I wouldn't say that your passenger or friend damaged the things, maybe they were the straw that broke the camels back but if a glass breaks just because I filled it up with water, it really wasn't my fault it's broke.
