Whiteish compound on oil pan bolt threads

Post by NC-MULE »

2000 S70 2.4L 4 valve non turbo

Pulled the oil pan off today and the longer (4") bolts on each end of the oil pan have a whiteish compound on the threads. Any idea what this it? Is it just a thread locker? I've also seen the same compund on other random bolts, big and small. The smaller oil pan bolts did not have anything on the threads.
Thanks pb

Is this the first time the pan has been off (that you know of)? Lots of mechanics/technicians/assemblers will use Lithium. Usually it's not used on fasteners though. Mostly on bearing and bushing surfaces to protect the engine until the oil pressure builds up. It is white. Most thread lockers (as in Loctite) are red or blue to designate the heat it will tolerate and torque it can take.

As far as I know this is the first time the pan has been off. It looks like a thread treatment of some sort. It's not on all the threads just a 1/4 to 3/8" spot in the middle of the bolt and it's only on the long bolts that go through the intermediate section to the block.
Those that have pulled a oil pan, did you apply sealant to the threads of the longer bolts?
Thanks pb
