1996 volvo 850 interchange questions.

Post by dunes20cb »

I recently purchased my volvo 850. When I got this the guy had told me that the radiator was bad and the head gasket too. After digging into it I also found the piston rings to be bad. So im rebuilding got a whole top end gasket set, rings, pcv valve kit, and bearings. Minus transmission and rear main everything will be worked on. So here is the question. After scouring endlessly for the piston rings i noticed that there is an abundunce of 93 850 piston rings but only a handful of 96. Does any one know if there is a difference in the rings? Does any one know the mic for the rings I need? (I. Measured 1.2 top 1.7 middle and 2 bottom)

There are some Parts resources on this forum if you dig a little. Also, FCPGroton.com has good breakdowns with exploded views and mike show the differences. Or just give them a call (you might need VIN numbers for both a 94 and 96 to get the answer.) For sure the engine displacements and engine numbers.

Here is a great resource. I would call the dealer and ask for the OEM numbers, then you will have an idea of what you need. That site is invaluable, use it for everything. I just rebuild a head and had a hell of a time ordering all the correct parts due to poor descriptions and incorrect descriptions.

Got the rings in, wrong size : (. I don't get why they used the same 83mm bore 93-97 on the 850 but had three or four different pistons they used during this year. So I decided to get them miked turns out they are extremely rare and almost all of the places I call don't even have mike specs on the rings. rrrrr. the ones I ordered just in case anyone else hase to were RSV014 from Nopi.com. These are from topline. According to the guys there they had them labeled incorrectly they only work with the turbo version. The difference is the middle and oil ring landings are much larger. top ring seemed to be the same. Here is my engine if anyone has any cool tricks to looking this up:

And I will be posting pictures since you all like them give me until this weekend I'm cleaning everything.

So after exhausting all attempts at finding these stupid f****** piston rings i am moving forward and buying new piston heads w/ rings. Now all models in the 850 family use the 83mm bore so is there any reason why one would work better or worse than the other. Probably a dumb question but dont want to mess up especially dumping this kind of money.

I take back my last post found the rings. Only one cpmpany i found that could get the rings at a resonable cost. They are Hastings Ring Manufactuer and the were the right ones. Mic specs for my 96 volvo glt (non-turbo 2.4)
Oil landing= 3.0
Middle landing= 1.75
Top landing= 1.2
Still going to post pics just been lazy srry.

Tried posting your chassis yv1ls5548t2219
into Vadis and got no response. Are you certain this is correct?

Thanks for posting about that source for rings. I'm also trying to source rings for '95 and '99 pistons (both B5254s)
