ETM swapping
I have two 99 v70xc's. Can I take one ETM and swap to the other or does it have to be programmed?

They both have been changed according the the service records that came with each car. I have two cars that I'm trying to make into one good one. One runs really good but the body is not so good. The other one has a great body but runs like garbage and is stuck in limp mode. It won't rev past 2000 rpm and runs rough, surges and when I do drive it around the parking like at work it will set a misfire code p0300. Cylinder 1 and 2 are being effected. I can uplug either coil or injector while running on those cylinders and there is no change to idle.
Either way I need to swap ETM's to get it out of limp mode.

I've already swapped over from the other car, coils, plugs, injectors, fuel rail, cam and crank sensors, maf sensor, turbo pressure, intake air temp, compression test, fuel pressure test, checked for vacuum leaks, charging system test, checked timing marks, etc, etc.
I've been at this for 3 weeks now with 2 dead cylinders and no reason for it. The only thing left to do now is swap over ETM's which was working during the 3 weeks off frustration and now just the other day started to idle funny, ets light on, then stall. Fire it back up and still runs like crap and won't rev even to 1800 rpm. If this doesn't fix anything then it going to be and ECU internal problem and I can't swap those over without have to program it to the vehicle.

So today I removed the ETM from the good running car and instsalled the ETM from the other car that is running rough and ETS light coming on, the other car also would not rev past 1800 rpm.
Anyway the ETM is now on the good running car and runs great. No ETS light and it will rev to as high as you want. So I will probably need to replace the ECU and that requires the dealer to program it. So does anyone want a mint body v70xc!! It will be going to the junkyard really soon!

I would be REALLY surprised if an ECU is giving you misses on just 2 cylinders.
I know you've shotgunned all kinds of things here, but maybe you need a second opinion.
Have you had anyone with a Volvo scanner pull your codes? May be worth a few bucks.
A quick analysis by someone who works on a lot of these cars could be revealing.
This could be something really simple that a well equipped shop would catch
with the right equipment and experience. Hate to see a good car junked. Just sayin'...

I think you've already proved to yourself how handy a second car that works is when finding faults.
If you swap ECM and TCM together there is no reason at all you can't swap them, as updates that have been done on the ECM need to be mated to the same programming on the TCM.
There are no other variables except for dealer fitted cruise control which is programmed into the ECM, so you may lose that unless the cruise stalk is swapped. There is no vacuum system in '99 plus cars for cruise, just stalk & software.
Just make sure you have your radio codes and leave both batteries disconnected for at least thirty minutes before the ECM/TCM transplant. The ETM can be swapped over and it will initialise OK.
At least then you've exhausted all the variables.

Well yesterday when I removed the ETM from the "non running good" car I noticed all kinds of mouse/rat crap sitting in oil right at the 90 that going directly up into the throttle plate. I then felt up inside the intake manifold with the ETM off that intake runner 1 and 2 are on one side and 3,4 and 5 runner are on the other side. Since finding the crap, I might have a giant rat stuck in the intake runner for 1,2 or both. Maybe the rat climbed up into the ETM and couldn't get out and got sucked into one of those runners while cranking the engine over?
It seems crazy but that's where I'm at right now with this car, it's something strange. There is no reason why cylinder 1 and 2 are dead other than no air flow? I need some sort of scope to check it out or remove the manifold. I will swap ECM/TCM first though.

There's no way one could get INTO the engine short
of eating it's way through some intake tubing, but -
Have you seen any signs of chewing on your wiring?
