I'm here in Melbourne, and parts from the USA are obtainable and relatively easy to get. I have four Volvos to maintain and every time I need something it's either FCP Groton or Volvo Wholesale Parts in Texas (a dealer who does business online)
If you need the valve body independantly there's a auto transmission seller in Sydney who can supply it for around $1,800 plus fitting. I can give you some numbers if you like. I'm figuring it's a 10 hour job plus reflashing/adaptations. I don't see any reason why it would cost more than 3 grand.

Hey that's amazing to know, thank you! Even something as heavy as a transmission can be worth sending from the US?
I've got a few small parts like trim and maybe some minor electronics so I'll definitely be checking them out for that.
I noticed Toyota IV trans flui was $18/L there instead of the $54 I was quoted. The US must be Volvo heaven.
I'd really appreciate those Sydney valve body numbers if that's ok, I think I was told the valve body would be $3200 on its own by another transmission place in Sydney. The car is now at a tranny specialist in Newcastle and I'm sure they'd be happy to fit whatever I can provide them.
If I can get this done for less than $3k I'd be very happy!

Call this US number first 877 337 4681 and the trail will lead you here if time is an issue.
Reamman rebuilt valve bodies cost only $450 plus shipping. http://www.reamman.com/default.aspx I think shipping was $150 plus $150 core charge (don't even think about sending your old core back to the USA at our postage costs)
You get old solenoids which have been cleaned and cycled (new solenoids are not sold separately) One of the posters here jimmy57 has used them many times and finds them very good.
I also had the VBX transmissions local number in Sydney but have misplaced it. Call 866 2438829 then they will give you a local (Sydney) number. Their retail in Sydney is around $1,395 but they suggested a brand new OEM one for $1,800 which is a lot chaper than $3,200!!

That's crazy! So a Reamman valve body will only set me back $750 shipped here to Aus? Even the VBX option sounds like a half decent one at that price.
I just spoke to the garage that has my car and they said it's $5000+ for a rebuild. I'm not sure what's included in this price but it's consistent with what a few other shops have quoted. Is this likely to be just the valve body and labour (+fluids) or are they quoting me for a bunch of solenoids as well?
I guess I need to wait until after new year when they re open and can give me a proper breakdown of what's wrong and what parts they need to buy, then I can start chasing up US bargains
I used to live there, right now wish I still did!

The Reamman and VBX autos come with tested used solenoids as solenoids are not separately available from Volvo. They also come with warranties.
In some cases there is a bushing that has worn in the auto (not part of the valve body) which will require a re-machining and insert. The guy in Sydney who is the reseller for VBX told me about this.
The local transmission sellers have a license to print something and I believe it comes from our wallets!! Even Volvo Bilia in Hawthorn would charge me $4,500 for this job.

Amazing, so if my valve body is what's gone (which is what most of the transmission folk seem to be saying), then I can get one from reamman posted out here for under $700 and have my car up and running again?
Did you end up getting one from the US, and how long did it take to arrive?

Straight from the horses mouth:
" Hello Mike, The price for the valve body is $450.00 US and there is also a $150.00 core or unit charge as well. The shipping takes 6-10 business days and is $58.00. Total cost = $658.00 US "
In addition to the valve body you may need that bushing to be replaced.
I'd say go for it. If jimmy57 says they're Ok that's good enough for me. Mine is very drivable and can wait.

Just an update on my V70T5 since starting this post back in Oct 2010, hang in there guys if you are going through the wringer right now, it's not an overnight fix but there is light at the end of the tunnel. After nursing my baby with the initial fluid flushes and continuous driving for the first six months she finally came good and now a year on there is not a hint of a flare or jump and she is just a pleasure to drive now. I know a lot of boxes do not respond and do have to be changed eventually but you should give it a chance to come good first, you might be pleasantly surprised
HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL

Ah good on you, well done T5Aus
Sadly no luck for me. Something was badly wrong inside apparently, throttle something or torque something gone. Can't remember but some awful sounds and smells coming from the transmission.
In the end, all I could afford was a used transmission, which didn't have a matching part number but seems to work (after the first one that got ordered by the shop turned out not to fit), I think it's from an S80.
As posted in another thread, replacement tranny works fine, but getting some weird instantaneous fuel consumption numbers.
Anything below about 30km/h is hitting super high figures, 99.9L/100km from idle. Feels like a bit of power has gone from the car too, not sure what it's all about but avg fuel figures seem ok so I can't complain too much, and car goes forward and backwards... what a saga though.
