I have got a 1988 760 GLE Automatic with the B28 V6 Engine and Bosch Motronic EFI which refused to start about a week ago.
Did some research and cleaned slightly corroded distributor cap and rotor, fitted new sparkplugs and thought that was it ! Well, still not starting ! So I concentrated on the fuel side of things, checking the fuses for the two pumps which were okay, then I got onto the fuelpump relais.
I have to mention that a few years ago I drilled some holes into the relais housing for ventilation as I know they run quite hot and can play silly games, as this one did back then, but after that it seemed to be running great.
I tapped the relais and tried to listen if it was clicking whilst I was playing with the ignition key and it was obvioulsly operating.
Also took off the fuel return line of the injector rail and cranked the engine but there was no fuel ! Thought it must be the pump, tried to listen to the tank pump but no sound.
Topped up about 5 ltr. gas, then cranked it again and still no go.
Turned the ignition on and off a couple of times and suddenly the engine ran !
Turned it on and off a couple of times, it still started again every time.
A success, but only short lived, because after a weeks driving it went on strike again last night at my friends place.
I tried again this morning with the fuelpump relais, but no go ! The I checked the wiring connections and discovered that the 3 pin connector from the crank-angle-sensor was slightly loose, so I pushed it together and bang....the engine started straight away !
Now I was under the impression that everything was good, drove the car some 10 km back towards my place and at the bottom of my steep driveway, I had to explain my neighbour about my trouble which took about 10 minutes.
I insisted not to switch off the engine and come in for a coffee and as I was going to drive up the hill to my house, the engine suddenly died again.
So I had to let it roll back onto the flat and even lawn of my neighbour to clear the driveway and straight away, looked at the connector of the crank-sensor.
When I tried to seperate it the whole plastic block on the sensor side disintegrated in my hand, unfortunately I don't really recall exactly where the 3 wires were connected to because they are 2 different colors on each side of the connector. There's only one common one which is the black one, but I don't even know for sure if they belong together.
So I connected them to the best I could again but the engine refused to start.
Checked for fuel pressure, there was fuel squirting from the opened return line too.
Then I checked for spark via new plug on 4th cylinder lead, spark is there too !
Took out 4th cylinder spark plug, dry and clean as new.
Now I'm stuck with no car on christmas and possibly new year.
In order to identify and correctly reconnect the wiring in the crank-sensor I would need a good wiring diagram for my car, I have got a Haynes Book, but that appears to be not really up to date with the diagrams and also with the instructions.
By the way, the crank-sensor on the V6 is exposed to extreme heat from the exhaust manifolds behind the engine and over the bellhousing, so the wire on the sensor was actually pretty much fried over time and time again.
At to moment I am trying to get the sensor out of the bellhousing, have sparayed it well with WD40, but it'll be a hard one, I know.
I inspected the fried wires and discovered that there are actually only 2 of the 3 from the connector going into the sensor itself, the 3rd one is more or less some kind of an unsinsulated blank with a aluminum foil wrapping which goes around the other two wires.
Does anybody know about these crank sensors and their connections, maybe its finally fried itself now and I'm wasting my time trying to fix it.
Seems to be once again one of these infamous Volvo Stall Syndromes one can read here over and over again. Would appreciate any help and links to diagrams and manuals.
By the way, I live in a somewhat semi-remote rural area in New Zealand, everything is 1/2 days travel away and hard to find
A Merry Christmas to all of You !
