Intermittent problem with A/C and heater/ fan blower
When inoperative, nothing responds to actuation of the A/C or Heater
This has happened several times in the past year, but now is a regular event. Searches have indicated possible causes:
a) Blower motor transistor
b) A/C clutch
c) Control panel switch
d) Low refrigerant level
-Are these items something I could check myself?
-Any other possible causes?
-Could this possibly be heat related?
Thanks for any help
2001 S80 Intermittent fan for A/C and Heater
2001 S80, 288,886 miles...I am having the same problem. It happens more in the winter when the heater is needed, but still does it during the summer when the A/C is required. Fan is full on, but only blows part of the time.
Hopefully someone can help.
Also, occasionally all of the power to the center console goes out - no rhyme or reason as to why.

Normally when the blower motor resistor module goes bad, the motor is running full speed. The A/C clutch operation and refrigerant level would not affect the ECC fan speed and its operation. Before declaring the ECC panel in trouble I would verify the following.
Find the circuit diagram of the ECC on page 96 (PDF) of the following link.
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/downlo ... iagram.pdf
Middle of the page you have the CCM unit, 3/112 (ECC). The CCM is controlling the motor speed. You have the module (4/31) generally called "resistor block" and the motor (6/28). They are located in the air duct under the panel at the feet of the passenger. They are assembled as one unit. A weak electrical contact on the assembly could be the source of the problem.
But before I would verify fuses 11C/23, 11C24 powering the CCM and fuse 11C/26 for the motor. Look if they aren't half blown (damaged).
Also I would highly suspect the relay 2/29 in position CMI22. You can find its position page 17 (PDF). It is located in the passenger compartment under the kick panel on the driver side in the US.
To test it, substitute it with another one of the same kind that isn't used. Smell it for any sign of burned contacts inside. The contacts can be pited. Under stress it may block current flows and the fan control becomes inoperative.
Other than this it may be a special cause that will require a good technician to find it.
Hopes this will help

You can access it through the repair database of this site if needed. Under Volvo wiring diagram and clik on 2001 S80.
You have to wait it is about 50MB.

Found out that the download was actually working. I just didn't let it download long enough for it finish and appear on the screeen.
I have the same thing with my volvo s80 the fan stopped working. if I turn the control to full power and tap on the bottom of the blower the fan will start working? do you think its the fan blower or the resister on the bottom of the fan? I cant get the bolt close to the fire wall that holds the fan on. does any one no how to get it out?

Find the procedure for the V70 which is the same for the S80. The two scews closed to the firewall are hard to remove.
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =9&t=21343
Inspect the motor for roughness. Lubricate lightly shaft ends.
A weak electrical contact could also give the same condition.
My motor was squealing at start-up in the winter time. Last summer as preventive maintenance I removed the motor assembly and found that the lower part was exposed to humidity. The shaft had started to corrode in its bushing. I lubricated the ends and since then the motor has been much quieter.
You may save its replacement.
