Parking lights on when car is off ????

Post by dalmo »

Hello, I am just curious if this can be done on a Volvo. I know a lot of cars in Europe have this feature. I want to be able to when I park my car on the side of a road have the ability to turn on the right or left blinker and have the parking lights just come on, front and rear. It should not drain the battery if this is turned on for about 8 hours or so.

Thanks

On the S/V series there is a rocker switch to the left of the steering wheel that will turn on one light bulb in the left rear. I have heard this refered to as a "moth light"

On my '93 850, if the headlight switch is in the "headlight" position, the lights go on and off with the ignition. However, if I put it switch in the "driving light" position, the parking lights will stay on no matter what position the ignition is in.

My parking lights stay on even with ignition off if I turn the head light switch half way on....and I have a '98 S70. I hope I'm understanding the question.

This is unrelated but something I've never been able to figure out. Why do manufacturers equip cars with "parking" lights and then configure the wiring so that the warning chime/buzzer stays on if you actually try to use the lights for parking? I was always taught and think it makes no sense to drive with your parking lights on - if you think it's dark enough to have them on you should have your headlights on. Maybe somebody smarter than me (which is just about everyone) knows the answer :?:

Im not sure if I explained correctly. When the car is off, key out of the ignition, in Europe, you can just turn the turn signal to left or right side (up or down), and which ever side you turn on that side will light up (front and rear lights), usually used if you park your car on a street and there are no street lights.

With key completely out, if I turn my headlight switch half way on, my parking lights stay on as do my flashing emergency lights and I'm in the U.S. ('98 S70). Blinkers don't work with key out of the ignition.

You are trying to get the front and back parking lights on, on just one side of the car, left or right, port or starboard, correct, not both sides? My Saab 900 did this by doing just as you said, put the light switch position to park and the turn signal indicator left or right and just that side would turn on. My '00 V70 does what the others say, when the switch is in the parking position all parking lights are on regardless of turn signal lever position.

You could hook up something if you really wanted to with a switch and some isolation diodes I would expect without too much trouble but trying to get the Volvo to work the way you want with the turn signal indicator would be a challenge to do from scratch.
