Dashboard illumination

Post by fat2baboons »

Hi. I am a new member and would like some information on my dashboard illumination. All of my warning lights work, and indicator and main beam is all ok, however, I have no illumination for any gauges,. I have checked the fuses and all appear ok. Any information on what to do next would be appreciated.
Also my heater fan only appears to work on fan setting 5 ? Help please.

Nikki

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Have you inadvertently turned down the dash light dimmer switch? It would be unusual for all gauge bulbs to go at the same time.

The most likely cause for the heater running only on 5 is a failed resistor pack which is mounted in the front of the heater blower housing.

Hello Bill, thank you for the advice but the dash light dimmer switch is not turned down - first thing I checked. Thank you for the information on the heater I will look into failed resistor. Still need some help with dash light if you have any other thoughts on this. Nikki

Hello, could you advise me as to whether I would need to replace the failed resistor for the heater and how easy is this to do? Thank you Nikki

If the resistor has failed, which is indicated by the symptoms, it will have to be replaced. The job itself is not too difficult as there is not too much to remove before you can get to the resistor.

Before you start you will need to know exactly the type of heater fitted. Do you have air conditioning? Are the controls manual or electronic? The answers to these questions will decide the type of resistor fitted.

The resistor unit is fitted to the heater unit near to the blower motor. To access the blower motor you will need to remove the glove box and the panel under the glove box. You should then be able to see both the blower motor housing and, to its right the resistor. Disconnect the wiring plug and remove the screw and ease the resistor out.

As for the instrument lights I find it hard to believe that all bulbs went together. As the dimmer switch is in the 'On' position It may be that the switch has failed. Take the switch out, remove the plug and run a live feed to the white wire. The instrument lights should come on.

Thank you Bill for this additional information and will try both these solutions. Hopefully at least one of them will provide an answer to faults. Kind regards Nikki
