Spare Keys - Where to get?

Post by DAK »

I need to get a couple of spare keys made for my (98 V70xc). Sent a note to the dealer to see if they sold blanks and could cut new ones, or knew of someone who could cut new ones....reply was "no". Does anyone know if Volvo sells replacement keys - either blank or pre-cut? (Just checking to see if the dealer read my message correctly, or is missing something.) They would sell me programmed remotes for $120.

Thanks

I get keys from the a dealer in Charlotte. Just call them, send them the proof of registration and the vin and the key will show up in the mail.

The remotes are another story. They need the car to program them and they are a little expensive. I'd try to get a remote from the junk yard and/or eBay then find a good dealer to program it.

Ikeyless has remote entry, I have used them before, its kinda a basic key fob, but hey. It works.
You will need your FCCID and Info off the box to order. (most likely)
They sent me programming instructions with mine
Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

For several keys I bought back in October, Superior Volvo was fast, courteous and cheap. Totally recommend them via eBay.

Remotes I would go junkyard or eBay, just make sure you get one that will work for your vehicle. Or Ikeyless may be good, I am not familiar with them.

EDIT: eBay link was updated to an active one

@erikv11...Thanks for the site. Do they cut them to the correct (VIN) before shipping?

For a '98, the remote must be added to the car by a dealer.
It's a completely different system than the earlier 850's.
But as stated, you can use a second hand remote fot that year
and save a couple of bucks. Replacement cases are also available.

Keys? Any good lock shop should have the abilility to copy them.

Yes they do. You send them the VIN and proof of ownership by email, they send you the cut keys.

You can also buy blanks if you want, pretty sure they are the same price, $10 + $1.50 shipping.

In my area, there are no key shops that can cut these. Believe me, I looked.

Your dealer is confused about your '98...That didn't begin until '99 on up.
The '98's just use a straight ahead key - No embedded transponder chip needed.

Maybe they're tryin to get an extra buck or maybe it's a later model 98 thing?
