I wouldn't go that far, but it is annoying on what otherwise is a terrific Gen 1. (Not losing sleep yet)!matthew1 wrote: You're frustrated... with your experience with the P80 this must keep you up at night.
It's not the ECU, as I said above, all parameters check out perfectly on the scanner
When it gets back from the body shop Tomorrow or Tuesday, I'll take it to Volvo and have it smoked to see if It has a very minor vacuum leak.
(That would be the logical next step plus it needs to be aligned anyway).
If it's clean the next step would be a leakdown/compression test to see if one cylinder may be not as good as the others

OH!
I also have to give out my secrets too?
Swapped MAF's with my 2000 V70R (which had a nearly new MAF) and drove it all day, much better now.
That had a new MAF because I needed a MAF for a sale car a couple of months ago so I put the 30K mile MAF in that car and bought myself a new one!
(Smoked it a week ago, no leaks)
At the same time I gave the wastegate a half turn, that really made it much "zippier" and the trans shifts smoother, (go figure that one).
This has be the months for MAF sensors, almost every 99 or 2000 in the last 6 months I've sold needed a new MAF.
There have been many discussions that a "OK" MAF will start to fail when a NEW ETM is installed.
I could not compare it to anything, this one was not running when I bought it (totally shot ETM and a leaking radiator)
When I have time, I'll take out the 2000 and see how this MAF is on that car. It may be fine, you never know... but swapping solved about 99% of the issue
(I attribute that last 1% occational burp to it having 90K miles)!

I had the same issue. Swapped MAFs with a newer unit and it went away for a time, then came back. No idea, although the swapped MAF was also fairly old. So maybe the MAF is just dying.
Maybe pull the MAF, undo the battery, and let the car forget the old MAF. Then reconnect everything. Might be O2s as well, but the MAF seems like a likely culprit. No idea why it would do it again though, after swapping it in a fairly new one.

The MAF I put in was out of my R, maybe 400 miles on it.
NOT the MAF

It sucks to hunt such a annoying issue.
Since you didn't mention having new 02 sensors, it's a good step to do since the AFR depends on the front O2 output as well. Rear one wouldn't affect that much.

2000 V70 XC SE with 150,000 miles, still going great !
