Weird issue, 98 V70 N/A Stalling, loss of power, etc

So, my girlfriend texted me today saying her check engine light was on. She got it checked out, and there were two codes stored - P0133 and P0422. I told her we had to change her front O2 sensor (thoughts?) and not to worry about it, we would order one and do it ASAP. Anyway, she called me after work to say that she was stranded and had to walk home. Luckily, she was pretty close. She said that it stalled while she was backing out of a spot, but started right back up. Then it stalled about 5 minutes later and wouldn't stay running.

I just picked up the car and drove it home, and what a mess. I had to keep the revs at around 2000+ just to get it to stay running. Every time you tried to turn right, the car would stall. Also, after two minutes, the car was losing power at 2500 RPM. I floored it and tried to keep it running, but it was hard. The revs would go up to like 3k - 4k with NO power and then SLAM into gear and get going. Car stalled an additional three times in the 1 mile trip home. (Some dude in a mustang at a red light thought I was trying to race him because I kept revving my engine, so he started revving his engine hard and took off once the light turned green.

)

So, I'm stumped. Can the O2 sensor cause all of this? Thoughts?

My current ideas - I'm "sick" tomorrow from work. I'm going to buy enough silicone vacuum hoses online to do both our cars. Also, I'm going to clean out her throttle body and TPS, even though I'm not sure if this will do anything. I'm going to crawl under and hit the kitty-cat to see if there is any rattling. I'm also going to unplug the MAF to see if that is the issue. Another thing I was thinking of is to put my fuel relay from my 96 855R into her car. Lastly, I'll order a new O2 sensor. Outside of all that, I'm super-stumped. Any other ideas?

Car is a 98 V70 N/A, 213K miles.

Oh, and she said that she lost power steering for a little bit too.

Whenever the car stalls or stumbles it will loose power steering.

I usually suggest doing 1 thing at a time. The BLITZ usually fixes things but it's nice to know which one or 2 things actually solved your problems. The MAF would be a good thing to check. Look for a blown off hose or vacuum line, especially around the icv.

Proof that 99% of Mustang drivers are morons. I feel bad for your ears - revving a Mustang is one of the worst sounds created by man.

Try unplugging the mass airflow sensor and taking the car for a drive around the block and see what that does for you.

Lol, yea, it was mega-funny. I was soooo hoping that it was a manual and he would stall. I think I would have had to pull over if that happened, since I was already cracking up.

I need to replace the vacuum lines and clean the TB anyway, so I think I'm still going to do that. I do want to pinpoint the problem before dropping cash though, and it looks like it might be the MAF. (See below).

Haha, the mustang did sound better than my car though.

I started up the car again today (home sick from work) and it stalled within 15 feet. I popped the hood, unplugged the MAF, and went for about a mile ride with NO ISSUES! So, looks like it is the MAF. Question though, would a bad MAF still throw those codes, or is the O2 sensor bad as well?

It's all to blame on the MAF.

The engine management system relies on two main things to monitor the amount of air in the engine:
1) The MAF
2) Front O2 sensor

If one reading is off, it will confuse the other.

Do not use any of the parts store mass airflow sensors - they will work for a short period of time (weeks), if at all. Order a genuine Bosch or Volvo mass airflow sensor.

In the meantime, you can drive the car (easily) without the sensor plugged in - just don't expect the same power from it.

Le sigh....

Cleaned the MAF sensor, and plugged it back in. Ran PHENOMENALLY for about a mile and a half. I was thrilled; thought all issues were resolved. Unfortunately, they came back and I had to unplug the MAF to get home.

So, does this mean it's toasted and I need a new one? I'm torn, since it definitely ran awesome after I sprayed it....

It sure sounds like it.

Do you have an 850 too? Swap the sensors and take it [the V70] for a more lengthy drive.
