Issues after PCV, Radiator

Post by IceTurbo »

Hello Forum,

Car is a 1997 850 T5 Wagon.

Just did the PCV repair, and swapped out my radiator and cooling hoses, everything is connected back up, but I'm having an issue keeping the car running.

Here's what's going on:

Car starts in the normal amount of time, when it catches, it revs up to 3000 RPM for about 10 seconds, then the revs drop and the motor stalls and dies.

I'm getting P1310, multiple misfires, and show low MAF flow, or low circuit, also have a low oxygen sensor 1 flow, I suspect a vacuum leak, but the things is I have no idea where it is.

When I rev the engine to keep it going, at 3000 RPM, the turbo gauge is showing vacuum instead of boost. I have no idea why this is, the only thing I can surmise is that the turbo isn't spooling properly? I don't know why that would be, I didn't touch the turbo during the PCV change. Only other thing I can think of is a crack in the post-MAF, pre-turbo pipe, but I don't see any leaks there. I need to drive this car down to California on Sunday, so any help that I can get is much appreciated.

I would double check all of your vacuum lines. I had a similar issue the first time I ever did the PCV too.

All vacuum lines are good, attached on the tree. There aren't many thankfully, compared to my '94 at least. A small vacuum leak wouldn't affect the running as much as it does, i've had them before. The idle isn't rough, it just dies.

I only touched the PCV and radiator, didn't touch the vacuum lines, just unhooked and rehooked them where they belong.

Man, something must be loose. I would start with checking under the icv. My hose was loose and it was causing my car to stall.

Most of the moderators on our forum have done this repair. You can PM any of them with your inquiry and I'm sure they will be more than willing to help you. I have yet to do this repair and because of this I can't offer any suggestions.

I have done 3 of them and the only issue I have had was with the hose on the bottom of the ICV coming off some how. the thing with problems that we create is that we usually over look OUR own mistakes and can't catch them.

Does the car have a EGR?

On the S70, there's a bracket on the right screw of the intake manifold that gets jammed between the intake and the gasket. Take it out and throw it away if you've still got it.

Other than that, this is a much bigger hose than a vacuum hose loose. One of your intercooler hoses has got to be loose - tug on every one of them and see if something pops loose.

Thanks for all the helpful replies so far.

I double checked the PCV, made sure all the hoses were properly connected, then double checked all the intercooler hoses. They are iPd silicone, less than a year old...all clamped down and tight.

I did remove the fuel rail on mine, but I put new o-rings on the injectors...I reattached it and torqued it down. , when I did the knock sensors on my '94, removing the fuel rail wasn't an issue.

I guess the reason that I am so stumped is because I've done a similar job before, had no issues, and followed the same steps for this job.

If the car could drive, I would take it in to get it smoke tested, but I don't think it can drive safely there. Ant other ideas or similar experiences? Thanks in advance.

Just an idea, but are the cam and crank position sensors too close to each other? Any other wires moved around or disconnected?

Interference between those two can cause some realllllly weird things to happen...like misfires!

Misfires can also be caused by bad a/f sensor readings...MAF perhaps?

I have two MAF, and it's done the same thing with both of them...I will check the cam and crank position sensors, thanks for that idea.
