02 s60 2.4T rough idle and stuttering under throttle

Post by azs60 »

Hey gents newbie here to this forum and volvo's. So i picked up an 02 s60 2.4t with 154,000 about a month or two ago here in phoenix for $2500. Needed some TLC but nothing I couldn't figure out on my own tell this started happening.

PROBLEM
Car idles a lil around 700rpm and chugs a little with motor cold or hot. When i'm driving also pulses/stutters under medium to heavy throttle. With throttle floored it acclerated pretty good but chugs like its misfiring or theirs and air/fuel starvation. (Note i also have a REGULAR SERVICE indication which i havent gotten read yet but i believe its just an oil change notification)

RESEARCHED DONE
I've some research and from what i have found it sounds like the ETM could be crapping out but I dont realy want to throw a $500 dollar part at a $2500 car with out knowing for sure. Is there a test i can do or inspection i can do to verify a bad ETM?

WHAT I HAVE DONE
Last weekend I ran some SEAFOAM 2/3 in a gas tank and 1/3 a bottle vaccuum/intake manifold. Gonna do a good oil change this weekend and probably replace the plugs.

FINALLY
If anyone out there has had a similar/same problem and can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. One last question, does anyone know a good honest shop here in the Phoenix, AZ area that i could go have it checked out.

Thanks KG

Good morning I also recently bought anther Vovlo, a '06 S60 with high miles, 144,000 miles. Three days after rolling out of the dealer I was driving home and experienced hesitation and sputtering. Initially I was thinking tranny was slipping so I went to the dealer and we took it for a lap around the block. As we drove it and attempted acceleration it sputtered and then the Check Engine light came on, he suspected an ignition problem. So I took it away from the more expensive Vovlo mech and went to the local import guy who troubleshot it down to bad Coil Packs. Three (3) of the five (5) were bad and at $83.00 each I began to feel ill. He replaced them, and sure enough problem solved. I will say that it is an easy job for even the most inexperienced mechanic. I had them do it because somehow the dealer had mercy on me and didn't charge me for the labor or parts.
All you have to do after troubleshooting down to bad coil packs is, removed the cover on the top of the motor, black plastic cover that says VOLVO on it, behind the oil cap. I also removed the two torx bit bolts holding the turbo tube so I could move the pipe to access two of the cover bolts. Slide the cover off and there you will have access to the coil packs. I believe they are held in by small screws as well and simply slip the coil packs over your sparks plugs.
Hope this helps.
Mike

All good suggestions, so I'd have the codes read to see if it gives out some info you can work with.

Ya, I was also thinking that it could be one/multiple coils. I also saw on youtube some guys take out there ETM and give it a good cleaning. So i think this weekend im going to get some new plugs, take out my ETM and clean it and change the oil.

Is there a test I can do one my coils with a multi-meter or something to see if any of them are bad while i have them out changing the plugs?

And Thanks for the quick replys hopefully I can get her running like new this weekend. I'll update if i get it smoothed out.

UPDATE when I hoped on the freeway Saturday the car started stutter pretty good. And I finally got a check engine light. Stopped by Orielys and had the code read. They downloaded a p0305 misfire cylinder 5. Replaced the sparkplugs today and took it for a ride around the block and all is well so. True test tomorrow on the way to work but I think the plugs did the trick.

i have the same problem originally described and have spent that 600$ on a electronic throttle module and it did nothing to the sputtering but did make the acceleration under low load seem smoother. although the scanner is still giving me codes for the front o2 sensors and long term fuel trim if you know what that is ?

Well the plugs fixed one problem but not the idle problem. It is wierd my rpm's sit at 700 rpm at idle and when it stumbles but my rpm indication drop like maybe 50, if any. And some times it wont hardly do anything. It does it warm or cold and I am getting tired of it. I am not getting any codes i had a guy i found on craigslist that worked for volvo look at it and it wouldnt do it. I cant figure this shit out i might have to through down the cash and take it to the dealer and have it looked at. I just bought a handful of parts from ipdusa. Some hood struts, some window slides, oil filter tool, new vaccuum lines, and cabin air filter. I need to order a set of front and rear rotor/pads i think im gonna get the pcv kit too. I am setting aside this saturday to work on it and I think i have an exhaust leak to that i can hopefully isolate. Anyways does anyone else have any other ideas or things i can look at?
