My new s70 t5!

Post by jb3fs »

I just recently purchased a 98 s70 t5 5 speed. There is 90,000 miles on it and only had one owner. What are some basic and usual things to check or replace on a s70 at that mileage? I got it from a dealer, so I don't know the maintenance background. Thanks a bunch.

Could someone also recommend a good guide on the s70 for basic repairs and fixes? For the last question, is the shift knob easy to get off and replace. I tried for a good 15 mins to figure it out, but didn't want to break anything. Thanks again!

Congratulations!

I have a s70 GLT 99. No speed demon like yours, but a very nice car that suits me perfectly.

Common problems: Bad steering joints and side movement inhibitors (dont know the exact english terms)
Put oil on the door hinges, otherwise they can break or squeak.
The widow buttons on the drivers panel are often bad, but easy to fix yourself - Push them hard and rock a little. If that doesent work, disassemble the door and put some electronic contact spray in them. Check for moist behind the door panel and apply new sealing lists if you find any.
I service the car myself and have a Hayes manual for the car, and it's ok. Volvo has a service manual too, and I suspect it's better (but also more costly).

Oil/Oil filter and spark plugs are easy to change. The coolant doesent need to be replaced at all according to Volvo, but most others say you should replace it about every 2 years. Use the Volvo C3 coolant and soft or distilled water.

I think the T5 have special spark plugs and different breaks than standard S70's.

At 90.000 miles I think everything should have been replaced - Make shure that the timer belt(!!) and driver belt are replaced! Transmission oil, break oil, brake pads, brake discs, Air filter, compartment filter and most probably some turbo stuff. Get the manual...

Good luck. Hope you keep your licence with a car that fast

Thanks much for the info! Greatly appreciated. If anyone could still help me out with removing the shift knob on a manual, that would rock.
