I have had that problem with peeling roof strips as well.
I simply got them replaced.
Don't think painting them is a good idea.

I replaced my weatherstrip last year and there was'nt any glue on the sides. In VADIS they suggest to glue both ends only, if you want to glue it completely be sure it fits easily in the roof. Mine is a little to tight and I have to give it a punch to get it flush.

You can take a razor, carefully cut all the rubber off, scuff, mask and paint.
It will look OK, not perfect, but OK, or.. buy new ones, 5 minute install

who sells them? I don't want to ask the dealer because I am sure they are very expensive there?

I am nearly certain that the trim strips from an S70 will fit. I was comparing the strips on a friend's S70 and they seem to be exactly the same size and shape (plus a few extra "bumps") as the 850 ones, but a much more durable material. A boneyard would probably sell you both strips for less than $50.
