How to test keyless entry?

Hi,
My 1995 850 came without keyless entry remotes.
Before I go down the road of trying to buy and reprogram a new remote, can anyone tell me how I can check the bits inside the car are working?
I can't seem to get the led in centre dash to do anything....

Also, any tips if I were to replace the whole system with an aftermarket keyless entry?
Is it as simple as removing the original controller and hooking the wires up to a new controller?

I had this problem when I bought mine (same year and model) and the european alarm set-up seems a little different to the U.S. On mine holding the key hard over in the locking position activated the dead locking and alarm (led starts to flash) and I was told this only happens on the basic alarm , from what info I could get only Volvo 'Guard' alarms have reprogrammable fobs . With the basic alarm the only fix is to try and get the control unit ( behind glovebox on the left just below A pillar ) and matching fobs (they're paired on manufacture) , the stealerships can get these but they are bloody pricey (nigh on 300 quid), breakers yards might help or failing that I found mine on fleabay for £25 . My info on aftermarket alarms was that they have to be independantly wired in they won't just plug 'n play as the Volvo control unit + fobs do . If you whip the glovebox out and check for the control unit the part number on mine was 6849012 and it took about 10 minutes to change , if you can get one do make sure they are a set !

I had an alarm issue and went to a jy and took one from there. There was also a key and fob in the car so I was good. I think I paid $35 for it.

There is a chance that your system works. Test it to see if the alarm is hooked up. I recently found out that not all cars had alarms. Roll the window down, lock the car, wait 10 minutes, reach in and unlock the car and enter it. See if an alarm goes off. Also you can try to start it. If the car starts you either have no alarm installed or it doesn't work. I believe there is 2 relays in the system as well. So the fact that it doesn't arm or work doesn't mean it does not have a system. I guess it's best to check behind the glove box.

I have no alarm and no matter what I try the LED on the dash refuses to blink.

If I decide to pull the current keyless entry module from behind the glove compartment, could i basically find out which wires go where and then connect them to a new aftermarket system?
Does anyone have experience of doing this? I wouldn't have thought it would be too difficult............
