Cam locking tool, haynes manual dimension incorrect

I just built the cam locking tool, for use on my B5244T2 engine, to the dimensions in this Haynes manual page:

and found one of the critical dimensions is incorrect. Specifcally, the thickness of the fingers that go into the cam slots is listed as 4mm or 0.157". The correct thickness is 4.5mm which happens to be very close to what is sold in the hardware store as 3/16" thick bar stock. The 3/16" think bar stock is supposed to 0.1875" but like a two by four its actually 0.175" which is fortuitously right on money for the 4.5mm or 0.177" critical dimension. Lest you think the extra 0.020"/0.5mm does not make a difference, it does. I started off grinding the finger down to the 4mm number specified in haynes and found the cam lock tool to be loose and floppy, allowing some 10 degrees of error combined error between the ideal locked position and what I ended up with. Even with the correct 4.5mm thickness you can still end up with a few degrees of error if you are not careful since the steel bar between the fingers can flex some as you tighten the cam gear bolts. So suggest you slowly tighten up the nuts on both the intake and exaust cams so that you do not flex the DIY cam locking tool before the gear positions are fixed to the cam position.

Thanks for writing this up! I think the illustration you refer to is from the UK version of the 850 Haynes manual. I can't find a similar illustration in the US edition. In the text of the US edition, it simply warns "Do not rotate the crankshaft or camshafts with the belt removed." (Chapter 2, part A, section 3.14)
Can you post a picture of the tool you made?

dont have pictures but it looks like whats shown in the picture here img142.imageshack.us/img142/8596/vvttimimgprocedure004qz9.jpg. To get the 3mm offset I took my micrometer to teh HW store and hunted for a 1mm thick washer and sandwiched three of them on each screw on one finger.

Here is a picture on one someone else made. I used flat bar stock where he used andle iron. If I had it to do again I would use angle iron as it will flex less.
