Question regarding Nissens radiator drain plug

Post by jmmxc »

Hi every one.
I just did a radiator change over the weekend successfully, not without pain (rusted screws, lower sides radiator reversed mounted bolts stuck etc...)
Original unit had developed a small crack about 3 in. alongside the bottom of the upper hose.
I notice that the Nissens radiator I ordered from FCPGroton came with a different type of drain plug. Rather than the "standard" plug (petcock) that comes with the original Volvo rad, this one has a tab extention that you twist open (with fingers or pliers).
Does anyone have any experience with twisting open this drain plug. I have not attempted to remove it for fear I might break it. It is very tight. But I need to know... eventually I will need to drain the rad at some point in the future.
Perhaps someone from FCP could pitch and explain also.
Thanks to all.

Twist it with some pliers and pull downwards. And then WATCH OUT! the floodgates have been unleashed!

It's a much better design than the Valeo radiators where the thing just snaps off.

A learning experience is one of those things that says, "You know that thing you just did? Don't do that."

Thanks for the warning...
Yeah, Nissens seems to be a well built radiator... and built in Denmark according to the label!

I am hoping it will last for some additional 150000 miles.
Thanks for clearing the situation again.

For my part I just forget that the plug is even there as they are so prone to cracking the socket. If I need to drain coolant I just pop the lower radiator hose off.

Yes, that makes sense. The hose is most definitely safer to use.
I do not have too much confidence in these plastic materials being used for such a vital function.
Thanks.
