Hmmm....the other moderator said if it was stalling, bucking, ect that it would be the MAF....I just bought it since it was the ONLY piece that I removed, cleaned, and reattached. Also the CEL code from ODBII said it was the MAF. I can return the part if it is not the correct one. It is a Bosch (current one) and probably was the original. I have 172k miles on it. The car is just completely cutting off, but restarts easily. I'm throwing my hands up.....

And that moderator (jablackburn) knows what he is talking about ... I agree it all makes sense, except that one part.

Just to clarify, if you unplug the MAF right now, does it run OK or like crap? You should be able to drive around town with the MAF unplugged, if the MAF is the only problem.

Many would say you are lucky to get 172k and 15 years from a MAF. So also, it isn't the end of the world if you end up replacing it as a preventive measure.

Yes I agree....
I am going to unplug it again this morning and try it out. I drove it around last night and it drove fine. It may have been that I used too much cleaner? I'll know in about 20 minutes and will repost...as well as unplug the MAF and test drive it.

OK...ran it fine with MAF connected. Once I disconnect and move into gear it cuts off. ANY suggestions? Hope to have the new MAF by tomorrow.

Some people say their cars do that when the sensor is unplugged, some don't.

I don't know the reasoning for it. I theorize that it may be a leak or something else off - a leak in the air pipes, etc. Perhaps the MAF sensor has learned to compensate for it, or maybe some cars just REALLY don't like running without it.

My S70 ran just fine with the sensor unplugged.

I just cleaned my daughter's MAF. I didn't have MAF cleaner so took a chance and used electronics cleaner. I just sprayed it over the electrode. I then cleaned the contacts with the same spray and a toothbrush.

On another note, the 850 codes are a pain! The response is very slow. You have to hold the button then release it then WAIT for it to start flashing. I expected a more responsive interaction but it was real slow. So every time I do this I have to slow myself way down.....zzzzzz....push a button ..............zzzzz......wait.......wait.......wait........blink (yay)

My tip is count longer than you think you need and after pressing the button and releasing, just WAIT - it won't blink right away. Stand there (in the frigid night winter air) and wait. After intentionally stalling the car with a can of spray (in the vacuum leak hunt game) and then running it with the ICV disconnected, I ended up with about 8 codes I had to clear. I did it wrong and had to repeat the read and clear sequence. Did I mention the frigid night winter air ? Anyway - go slow with the codes and be very patient.

OK PROBLEM SOLVED!! Installed new MAF and it runs like a dream...so much power in "Econ Turbo" mode now and gas mileage indicator is much much more accurate and where it should be. Thanks to jblackburn...a fellow Virginian!!! Starting new thread for a new issue...not engine related...thanks to all! GREAT FORUM!
