Definitely worth a shot, as it's great when the cheap-O units work!
See if you can get a used unit from someone on here or on VS so that you don't buy an expensive new one to just find out it wasnt that. Also if you do go with a new Volvo units, try Tasca volvo as they have some of the past prices for blue box items.

I saw a post somewhere about another sensor in the bottom of the Air Filter box that controls air flow or temperature (forget which),. but I've looked all over my Air Box and dont see any other sensors except the MAF on the top side.
There IS something mounted on the engine side of the box about 6 inches under the MAF tube,... but it isn't visible from the inside of the box with the air filter out.
Anybody know about this??
I think the post was about a 1995 model 850 or S70,.. maybe it it' different than my 97 GLT. ??

I saw the PM and replied. It can be a little temperamental but I think it sends them even when it looks like it didn't.
I think you are referring to the airbox thermostat. I don't think turbo models have one but even if they do, is is on the other side of the MAF so not an issue. It just determines if the air filter sees warm air or ambient temperature air.ronzara wrote:I saw a post somewhere about another sensor in the bottom of the Air Filter box that controls air flow or temperature (forget which),. ... It sounds like you are talking about the thermostat in the air flow box. I have a 94 850 that had a bad one. The symptom is that the car starts fine when cold but after it warms up, it will just die as if the engine has been turned off. Wait a minute (or 2 in hot weather) and it starts right up. I removed the thermostat (my hands are small so I could just reach in and get it) and fixed the cold air flow hose in the open position. Has worked perfectly for the last 7 months. I bought a new thermostat and will put that in some time soon. I have photos of this but I don't know how to post them here. If you want to email me directly I can send them to you.
Yeah,... not the same symptoms I'm having. My car wont run cold or hot.
But I have a Bosch MAF coming as well as a Fuel pump relay. And I have another Fuel Filter to put on.. SO, fingers crossed. I'll know something by Tuesday or Wednesday.
I forgot to mention that when the car starts up, and then starts to sputter and die, the UP SHIFT LIGHT on the dash comes on. Seems odd to me. Also ABS is ON. and TRAC light stays on as well. Could this be part of the start up problem or a whole different animal altogether??

OK. After much waiting, my Bosch replacement MAF arrived. So I installed in today. Slight change in idle stability , but still WAY to hard to start and car is completely undrivable... falls on it's face and dies.
SO FAR CHECKED OR CHANGED:
Replaced FUEL FILTER
Replaced FUEL PUMP RELAY
Replaced MAF Unit
Replaced IDLE CONTROL VALVE
Checked Vacuum lines for leaks.
NEW AIR FILTER

CHECK OUT MY VIDEO OF THE PROBLEM:
